Flyers Put Gagne on Waivers

While Gagne's play wasn't great, I put some of the blame for that on Hakstol. Gagne, an offensively gifted but defensively challenged player, had an o-zone start % of 41.9%. Umberger, on the other hand, who has lost any semblance of offensive skill but still works hard defensively has enjoyed a 57.6 o-zone start %. Makes no sense and points to misuse.

Sam Gagner is definitely skilled but quite frankly, the Flyers were winning a lot without him in the lineup and not to say it was his fault but coaches have a tendency to keep the same lineup when a team is successful

He wasn't playing any and they didn't want to send Scott Laughton down because they've liked his game

Larger picture...WTF. You have a player whose biggest skill is generating offense and speed. You waive him and keep Umberger?! And I like RJ.

I think the main reason is that Gagne's contract is up at the end of the season, so there's no concern about the effect on the relationship between Gagne and the team, whereas they're stuck with RJ for another season.

Yes, the Flyers needed to clear money to keep Ghost. Yes, the team has been playing without Gagner for a while. Yes, Gagner is a defensively limited player. This just strikes me as a short term/short sighted quick move. I think the next move waiting is what happens after Streit has played a few games.

It's easy to point the finger at Umberger too for being the main reason we lost to the Sharks. He has zero goals this season and yet he takes a slashing penalty in the offensive zone while we're up 2-1 in the 3rd period and their power play is rolling. That is completely unforgivable.
