Who might those holdovers be as Payton and general manager George Paton reshape the roster? That remains to be seen, but what follows is our ranking of Denver’s in-house class of unrestricted free agents:

1. Dre’Mont Jones, DE

Age: 26

With free agency on the horizon, Jones was asked in November whether he wanted to remain with the Broncos long term. His response: “I’m here now.” Jones, who has 22 sacks through four seasons after being selected by Denver in the third round of the 2019 draft, appears eager to test his market in free agency coming off a season in which he tied a career high with 6 1/2 sacks while playing in 13 games. His ability to play at multiple spots along the defensive line and proven durability — he hasn’t missed more than four games in any season — could make him among the most coveted defensive linemen in a free-agency class that could also include Philadelphia’s Javon Hargrave and Washington’s Daron Payne.

The Broncos could place the franchise tag on Jones at a one-year figure of $19.7 million, according to Over The Cap, a possibility the former Ohio State standout acknowledged following Denver’s season-ending victory over the Chargers. But Paton expressed a desire midway through last season to have Jones be a part of the Broncos’ defense for the foreseeable future.

“He is one of our core players. We want him on here a long time,” Paton said in November. “We’ll just leave it at that.”

Another option to consider: Might the Broncos, having traded three first-round draft picks across the past two offseasons, tag Jones intending to trade him? The Jaguars (Yannick Ngakoue), Texans (Jadeveon Clowney), Seahawks(Frank Clark) and Chiefs (Dee Ford) are examples of teams that have received significant draft compensation in recent years in trades of edge rushers/defensive linemen made after those players were tagged.

He is a great D lineman but 19.7 is a lot for his position. Hoping we can do a 3 year deal and spread the cap hit a little between 2 years with not a huge cap hit in year 3 as his position does wear down, but that is probably a pipe dream.

Kind of a hack job of an article.

He quotes DJ from months ago, right after trading his mentor.

Then assumes because DJ has said nothing since then about wanting to stay in Denver, the opposite must be his true feelings.

Maybe we tag him, maybe we trade him. But everyone who has half a brain knows he's not walking away for nothing.

And 19.7 is top 5 for a DE. Less than Von, Garrett, Crosby and Williams. Some of them are one dimensional or pass rushers, whereas DJ is able to set an edge and anchor against the run.

Maybe he leaves, maybe not. But he deserves to get paid regardless. Might as well be here.
