When will Luigi get popped? Seriously.

Dude has been floating around the Cleveland system since ‘10, not making it to AA until ‘16. He has a career OPS of .784. Without some kind of explanation for the sudden Bonds impression, I am going to assume he is just doing a Bonds impression.

I'm not ready to subscribe to that theory just yet. The guy is 25 years old and is finally about league average age for the first time (unless you count his demotion to high A ball two years ago). I think he was playing a bit over his head up to now. He has also shown a propensity to struggle his first time through a league but when he repeats he puts up much better numbers. He is also showing more patience at the plate. He's already drawn as many walks as he did in 2016 and is 5 off from matching last year's total. He is only 36 walks from his career high. I think he's making better choices at what to swing, which is helping him get better pitches to hit.

I'm sure he's been "randomly tested" already. Just an extended hot streak. The BB% and K% are pretty nice though, if he can sustain those.

Thursday 5/17

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

AAA: Sacramento River Cats lost 12-11 (20-21)

Chase d'Arnaud 2-5, HR (5th), 3B, 1 RBI, 2 R, 1 K, 1 error (4th)
Ryder Jones 3-4, 2B, 2 R, 1 BB
Orlando Calixte 1-4, HR (5th), 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Austin Slater 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Kyle Jensen 2-5, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Eury Perez 2-5, 3B, 3 RBI, 1 R

Matt Gage 3.1-10-7-4-0-2
Madison Younginer 1.1-6-5-5-1-2
Josh Osich 1.1-0-0-0-0-2
Jordan Schafer 1.0-1-0-0-0-2
Ray Black 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

Good stuff from Osich, Schafer and Black. You may remember Schafer from somewhere

Here's a good look at Ray Black (don't listen to the announcer, that strikeout pitch was NOT a changeup, it was his breaking-ball, backed up on him a bit)

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels was postponed

A+: San Jose Giants lost 6-3 (23-18)

Jacob Heyward 2-4, 1 RBI
Jalen Miller 1-3, 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R

Jalen Miller can hit a fastball, and he's shown some improved skills at second base defensively. If he is able to track a breaking-ball consistently, could really improve his stock. Batting a solid .295/.351/.462 right now

Melvin Adon 6.0-4-1-1-1-7
Caleb Baragar 0.1-3-4-2-2-1
Nolan Riggs 1.2-0-0-0-1-2
Rodolfo Martinez 1.0-1-1-1-0-2

Adon's fastball was 96-100 in this game, and was using his breaking-ball and changeup to get K's as well. Probably just needs a fastball out of then Pen, but the Giants will roll with him in th rotation as long as they can. He hold his velo deep into games.

A: Augusta GreenJackets WON 2-1 (24-14)

T.J. Bennett 2-4, HR (1st), 2 RBI, 1 R, 2 K, CS (1st)
Orlando Garcia 2-4, 1 R

Aaron Phillips 5.0-5-1-1-1-3
Carlos Sano 2.0-1-0-0-0-3
Camilo Doval 1.0-0-0-0-0-2
Frank Rubio 1.0-0-0-0-0-1

Here's Doval, my favorite obscure prospect. Didn't throw the cutter, unfortunately.

Maybe IRods kid is the answer to Valdez? DFA Valdez, call up Rodriguez and move Holland/Blach/Stratton to the bully.

He couldn’t be any worse.

And if they are going to insist on having Slater in Sacto, at least find his 2B mitt in the corner of the storage closet and dust it off. Gomez is holding onto a prime roster spot as well.

Friday 5/18

AAA: Sacramento River Cats WON 7-3 (21-21)

Mac Williamson 1-4, HR (7th), 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Austin Slater 1-4, HR (3rd), 1 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Chase d'Arnaud 3-5, HR (6th), 3 RBI, 2 R, 1 SB (9th), 1 K
Hunter Pence 2-4, 1 BB, 1 assist
Steven Duggar 1-5, 2B, 1 K, 1 CS (3rd)

Mac's homer literally left the stadium

Between the majors and minors, Mac Williamson has 10 homers. He's played 17 games!!!!! He'll be back ASAP.

Meanwhile a'Arnaud is batting .295/.377/.543 in 35 games. He's hitting for power, stealing bases and playing multiple positions. I'd probably rather have him up right now filling in at 2nd over Kelby, but it would create some roster crunch issues once Panik and Hanson are healthy. d'Arnaud and Hanson are out of options.

Dereck Rodriguez 7.0-8-3-3-1-6
Manny Parra 2.0-0-0-0-0-1

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels were, you guessed it, rained out again. Haven't gotten a game in all week.

A+: San Jose Giants lost 3-2 in extras (23-19)

Sandro Fabian 1-4, HR (3rd), 1 RBI, 1 R, 2 K. Game-tying shot in the 9th.
Jalen Miller 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB (4th)

Logan Webb 3.0-2-0-0-2-3
DJ Myers 0.2-2-1-1-0-1
Jeff Burke 2.1-1-0-0-2-0
Dylan Rheault 2.0-1-0-0-0-1
Patrick Ruotolo 1.0-0-0-0-0-1
Rodolfo Martinez 0.2-2-2-0-0-0

Myers is typically the piggy-back starter, so exiting after just 4 batters probably means he got injured. Will investigate, just came off a "pitcher of the week award" in the Cal League.

A: Augusta GreenJackets WON 2-1 (25-14)

Orlando Garcia 2-4, 2B, 1 R
Ryan Kirby 1-3, HR (5th), 1 RBI, 1 R, 2 K
Heliot Ramos 1-4, 1 K, 1 CS (6th)

Jason Bahr 6.0-5-1-1-1-11
Ryan Koziol 1.0-0-0-0-0-0
Franklin Van Gurp 2.0-0-0-0-1-2

This was Bahr's second consecutive game with 11 K's, he has 4 games with at least 9. His 60 K's lead the entire league in just 41.2 innings, against just 12 walks and 31 hits. He throws a fastball with good sink up in the mid 90s, but usually in the low 90s. His curveball flashes plus potential, and he has a changeup. He should be promoted soon (perhaps very soon if Myers is injured).

FWIW, I've heard that the Giants are high on D-Rod (sounds dirty) and considered calling him up over Valdez, but ultimately went with Valdez (perhaps because the Sacramento rotation is just in shambles right now).

So it's not far-fetched to say it could happen soon.

Rodriguez throws in the low 90s with his fastball, but out of the Pen it gets up to 95+. It's not a particularly special pitch, though. Pretty straight.

His curveball is his bread and butter. It's a real good pitch. He has a slider and changeup as well.

Out of the Pen, all he'd need is that curve and fastball to be successful. Has good control too, just 11 walks in 44.1 innings.

Bring him up, dfa Valdez and bump Holland (or Samardzija, I know a stretch on that one) to the bullpen. I like it.

Strick’s FB used to be straight as an arrow too. Now it acts almost like a reverse slider (2-seam??). If DRod has a good arm, maybe Herges can add that pitch while in SF. And I would be OK with calling him up as a bully arm, but his going 7 yesterday is encouraging for him in the rotation.

The earliest this would happen now would be Wednesday. Not sure I want Valdez up that long.

Valdez is worthless.

Considering the Giants don't want to bring up Williamson for another week, Valdez is most likely going to be around until then.

Saturday 5/19

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

AAA: Sacramento River Cats WON 11-7

Mac Williamson 2-4, HR (8th), 2B, 4 RBI, 2 R, 1 K, 1 assist. Doing it all
Steven Duggar 3-6, 3 R, 1 SB (7th), 3 K
Austin Slater 2-4, 2B, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB (3rd), 1 BB
Hunter Pence 2-5, 1 RBI, 3 K. He's hitting, but for no power whatsoever.
Orlando Calixte 3-4, HR (6th), 2 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 SB (5th)

His homer didn't go as far as yesterday's, and it still nearly went out of the stadium completely. Also, look at that bat flip suace

Casey Kelly 5.0-10-6-6-2-3
Tyler Rogers 1.1-1-0-0-0-1
D.J. Snelten 1.0-0-1-1-1-1
Josh Osich 0.2-1-0-0-0-0
Ray Black 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

After a couple of rough first outings, Ray Black had a perfect series in Salt Lake City, striking out 4 of the 6 batters he faced. More importantly, Ray Black pitched on 1 day of rest yet again. That's good.

Black is an uncomfortable AB. He brushes you off the plate with his limbs flailing around on the mound, then hits the corner with two fastballs to get up in the count, then blow 100 above the zone. And he has a nasty breaking ball in the low 80s always in his back pocket.

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels WON 8-6 (21-17)

Do you all remember when Dylan Davis was an exciting prospect? He sure went away fast in AA.

He was always kind-of a stiff. Short arms with not great bat speed. Extremely strong so if he made good contact it would go a mile, but he couldn't cover the outside part of the plate. In the field, he has no home.

As a right-handed bat, that's an extremely high hill to climb.
