Akron, OH - Ricky Oropesa is unstoppable. The Squirrels first baseman collected his second consecutive multi-homer game in a 12-2 drubbing of Akron on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. The Squirrels (67-65) tied the franchise record for runs in an inning with nine, as Oropesa hit two home runs in the frame. Oropesa homered five times with pair of grand slams and 13 RBIs in the four game series. The Squirrels have won the season series against Akron 9-1 and could be as few as two games out of a playoff spot if Altoona loses tonight. There are eight games remaining in the 2015 season (four home games).

Richmond jumped out to an early lead for the fourth consecutive night against Akron and starting pitcher Duke von Schamann. Devin Harris, Engel Beltre and Eliezer Zambrano all singled in the second inning to produce the first run of the game. Rando Moreno then doubled into right center field to score Beltre for a 2-0 lead. Moreno's double would have also scored the trail runner Jesus Galindo but the ball bounced off the track and over the wall, resulting in a ground-rule double. The RubberDucks countered with a solo home run form Bryson Myles in the third to cut the deficit to 2-1. Akron would load the bases in the fifth against Biagini and threatened to tie the game but Alex Lavisky struck out end the inning.

Richmond then turned the game on its side with a record-tying nine-run sixth inning. Oropesa led off the inning with a home run to right centerfield off von Schamann. The next six hitters managed to reach base before reliever Josh Martin recorded the first out of the inning. Rando Moreno connected on a two run triple down the right field line and Myles Schroder and Juan Ciriaco reached on walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases for Oropesa. The Squirrels slugger promptly drove the ball over the left centerfield wall for a grand slam and an 11-1 lead. It was the second consecutive game with a grand slam for Oropesa and his 17th home run of the year.

Joe Biagini (10-6) earned the win by hurling six innings of one-run baseball. Biagini scattered eight hits and struck out four on 94 pitches in the win. Matt Gage tossed two innings of relief and Tyler Mizenko finished out the game. Devin Harris homered in the top of the ninth to extended the lead to 12-2.

Duke von Schamann (1-2) was hit with the loss. He allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings of work. The Squirrels improved to 9-1 against Akron on the season and have won three consecutive games for the second time in August.

San Jose lost 8-3

Ronnie Jebavy went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs in the Volcanoes's 4-2 win Sunday
Salem-Keizer clinched the series against Boise in a 4-2 decision on Sunday night at Volcanoes Stadium. The win put the Volcanoes two games ahead of the Hawks as the playoff battle enters its' final week.

Ronnie Jebavy lead the way for the Volcanoes, going 3-for-3 from the plate to secure the Salem-Keizer victory. The biggest hit of the night came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning just after Boise had tied the game 2-2. With two men in scoring position, Jebavy lined a hit into right field to score Ashford Fulmer and Christian Lichtenthaler, giving the Volcanoes the 4-2.

Caleb Smith worked a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to defuse a late Boise threat, striking out four of the six men he faced in only 1 2/3 innings of work to secure the win. It was the team leading seventh save of the season for the South Carolina native.

Boise started strong off of Volcanoes' starter Nolan Riggs as Marcos Derkes produced a double and later scored from a Kevin Padlo line drive into left field to begin the first frame. That gave the Hawks a 1-0 advantage before Salem-Keizer had a chance to bat.

However, the Volcanoes answered quickly as Ronnie Jebavy singled to lead off the first, then scored off an RBI double from Steven Duggar. Miguel Gomez then laced a single to bring home Duggar, giving the Volcanoes a 2-1 advantage into the second frame.

The Hawks tied the game in the top of the seventh, as Jensen Park tallied an RBI single off of reliever David Owen to level the game at two apiece.

The win secured the first series victory for the Volcanoes in six attempts, dating back to early August against Eugene.

While the Volcanoes won, Salem-Keizer did not gain any ground in the second-half standings. Eugene smacked Hillsboro 10-4 Sunday night, and remain three games better than the Volcanoes in the standings with six games left to play in the regular season.

Player of the Game: Ronnie Jebavy went 3-for-3 from behind the plate, contributing two RBI's and stealing three bases in the close contest.

That DSL team is impressive. Mostly 17 and 18 YOs.

Hard to really pick out prospects until they get stateside, but dominating the league like they did this year is a very good sign.

Offensive Player of the Week for week ending 8/30

Eastern League
Ricky Oropesa, Richmond (SF)

(.520/.538/1.320, 7 G, 13-for-25, 5 2B, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 6 R, 1 BB, 6 K)
Oropesa said it himself: He might have to start looking into moving to Akron. All five of the Flying Squirrels slugger's five homers and 13 of his 14 RBIs came in a four-game series at Canal Park. Over the weekend, he had back-to-back two-homer games, both of which included a grand slam. After hitting just .241 with a .644 OPS in the Eastern League a season ago, the 25-year-old first baseman credits more regular playing time for his turnaround this year and has a .260/.317/.440 line with a career high 17 roundtrippers in 123 games with Richmond so far.

* Bakersfield out-hit San Jose 10-9.
* Ragira hit his first home run since July 31. It was his 30th career homer with the San Jose Giants (2014-15).
* Dan Slania (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Ian Gardeck (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) also each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

* San Jose fell to 3-8 at Sam Lynn Ballpark this season.
* The Giants (72-67) fell one game behind Stockton (73-66) for the first Wild Card spot in the North Division. A San Jose win and a Ports loss on Monday would also give the Giants home field advantage over Stockton in their Mini-Series match up.

San Jose lost a tough one, 1-0 to the Visalia Rawhide

Christian Arroyo 2-4
Aramis Garcia 1-3 (also threw out a runner stealing 2b)
Seth Harrison 1-3

Christian Jones 5.0-3-0-0-0-5
Tyler Rogers (L, 1-1) 2.0-2-1-1-2-2
Ian Gardeck 1-0-0-0-0-1

The Giants had their chances, leaving 2 men on in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. Christian Jones, normally a reliever, did an excellent job for 5 innings.

Rogers gave up the only run of the game in the 7th, when Seth Harrison misplayed a ball to deep center that went for a triple. Daniel Carbonell should have been backing up the play, but did not. With the infield in, the next hitter hit one just out of the reach of Christian Arroyo for the RBI.

The Giants faced a buzzsaw in Luke Irvine (W, 1-0), a 26 year old who has been pitching the past few years in independent leagues, and had only thrown 12.1 innings for the Rawhide this season. He was brilliant, striking out 12, and hitting 95mph on the gun in the 9th. He got stronger as the game went along.

Luke Irvine Baseball Statistics [2010-2013]

The Giants' hitters seemed over-matched.

I am not a huge fan of Villalona. He made several gaffes in the field defensively, and was not very disciplined at the plate.

And I am not all that thrilled with Carbonell, either. I have seen next to nothing from him in the AZ Fall League or in the games I have seen him in with San Jose this year.

Jonah Arenado, up because Ryder Jones is on the DL, looked good in the field, but terrible at the plate. He should be in San Jose next year, but he was not ready this year for Cal League pitching.

Tomorrow night's game is in San Jose, with San Jose needing to win three in a row to advance.

I'm kind of bummed to find out that Blake Miller retired. I don't really know what injury he suffered with this year (other than a wrist injury) but I do know that it kept him off the field for most of the season. He was drafted in 2013 and, while he was older than most guys at his levels each year, he did well in 2013 and 2014. He had a slow start at double A before the injury, and then played in 5 rehab games in the AZL in July before being shut down for the season. I had hoped he would be another decent hitting middle infielder and could have created additional depth for the team. Hope he does well at whatever he moves on to do.
