• Today marked the fourth straight game the Mets produced four hits or fewer. That is the third-longest streak in franchise history. In 1963 and 2004, the Mets went five straight games producing four hits or fewer.

• They twice had a runner on second base with none out Sunday, and failed to score in both cases.

• The Mets entered Sunday ranked 29th in runs (90), 30th in average (.215), 29th in on-base percentage
(.280) and 30th in slugging percentage (.310) in the majors since the All-Star break.

NEW YORK -- Terry Collins offered no indication David Wright would return to the lineup for Monday's matinee series finale against the Chicago Cubs.

Wright departed Saturday's game after six innings after being struck in his already injured left shoulder with an 88 mph fastball from Dan Straily.

He did not appear in Sunday's game, nor did he speak with the media pregame or postgame. A team spokesman said Wright was getting treatment. The spokesman added that Wright did not require any MRIs or other tests.

If something is wrong with Wright can they please address it now and not wait until the offseason? If we have any shot next season Wright needs to return to form.

NEW YORK -- Mets manager Terry Collins resorted to gallows humor when asked after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Cubs what he is seeing from his offense.

“Not much,” Collins said dryly, with a laugh. “We’re not swinging very good.”

Collins went on to compliment Cubs starter Jake Arrieta’s curveball, but the Mets’ rough showing at the plate has been prolonged.

The Mets have not exceeded four hits in any of their past four games. They will tie the franchise record for futility if that streak continues when they face Kyle Hendricks in Monday’s series finale.

The Mets are collectively hitting .210 in August.

Collins acknowledged Daniel Murphy looks tired and likely needs a day off. The manager added, however, that he likely cannot afford to give Murphy a rest while David Wright is sidelined with a left shoulder injury.

Murphy went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Sunday. Although he entered the game leading the National League in hits, he is now hitless in his past nine at-bats and 4-for-24 on the homestand.

“There’s no question, I think Dan is getting tired,” Collins said. “I’ve got to get him a day off here, although with David out, I’d hate to have them both out of the lineup at the same time. I’ve got to get Murph off his legs. He’s getting tired. You can see it.”

Said Murphy: “I’ve played as much baseball as anybody else in the big leagues, so I’m not the only one who has played a lot of baseball. I’ll try to center the ball better tomorrow.”

another early start tomorrow cant help...who's buying?

My money is on Colon....but you never know with our anemic offense. That being said, they'd better come out strong and get a win, before they come out here to play the A's & Dodgers then go back to NY to play the Braves (who always have our number).....so who knows when their next win will be???

Colon scratched from today's game to be with his ailing mother in the DR

NEW YORK -- New York Mets right-hander Bartolo Colon has been scratched from Monday's start against the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field.Colon is traveling to the Dominican Republic to be with his mother, who is "extremely ill," manager Terry Collins said.

Right-hander Carlos Torres will make a spot start in place of Colon.

With their Triple-A affiliate currently playing in Omaha, Nebraska, the Mets are unable to get an extra arm to New York for the matinee series finale against the Cubs. The Mets instead will wait until Tuesday to place Colon on the bereavement list and add an extra pitcher to supplement a bullpen that figures to be heavily used Monday.

Collins said Daisuke Matsuzaka may be activated from the disabled list earlier than originally intended and fill that role. The Mets originally planned for Matsuzaka to make a rehab start with Class A Brooklyn later this week. Matsuzaka, returning from elbow inflammation, logged six innings for Double-A Binghamton on Saturday.

FIRST PITCH: When will the Mets awake from their hitting doldrums?

For a fourth straight day Sunday, the Amazin’s failed to exceed four hits. If the Mets again fail to do so Monday, they will tie the franchise record. During a pair of Septembers -- in 2004 and 1963 -- the Mets went five straight games with four hits or fewer in each.

Ugghhhhh

Does tanking the rest of the season have an impact on Terry Collins coming back? Is he back regardless of the finish?
