Geez all of these are hard so far. Elway dragged a mediocre at best offense to 3 SBs then finally won 2 when he got some help. Rodger the Dodger was my favorite QB of the 70s. Best Cowboys QB easily. Tough call. Went with Elway.

Big time Staubach fan here...Roger "the dodger" was in my OP better the Elway by the way he scambled and escape pressure.

JE is a great, but this is a no brainer here.

I'm one of those that think Elway is one of the most overrated QB's of all time!

Long tooth by a country mile.

Word. Both great QBs, but I don't think that Staubach would have led the '86, '87, or '89 Broncos teams to AFCCs. Those who doubt that claim ought to look at the Broncos rosters those years. People point to the SB losses without considering just how much those teams overachieved -- mostly due to Elway's heroics -- to even get there.

Took Roger, but it was close. Elway had the better arm, but Roger was more elusive and had the better brain in my opinion.

Im abstaining. Never saw RS play. Saw Elway complete less than 50% of his passes in a season though.

Elway's completion percentage was less than 50% one year -- his rookie season -- in a 16-year career.

Right. But 56.9 for his career is still not very impressive. (3 times over 60%.... In 16 years. 27 TDs for a career high.)

To me your argument is symptomatic of what is wrong with trying to use numbers to compare guys who played in different eras on different teams with different surrounding casts. Completion percentages and number of TD passes are both far greater now than they were when Elway played. Elway also played most of his career with a HC who really tried to emphasize running the ball -- until, it was too late in the 4th quarter of games for that to work, at which time Elway was called upon to bail them out. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't, but he never had the quality of teammates (or coaches) that most of the QBs who are GOAT candidates had, until he finally led his team to win back-to-back SBs when he was way past his physical prime.

Elway was an ultimate competitor and a winner. I'll never say otherwise. But you can compare his stats with plenty of QBs from his era and they arent going to look all that impressive, in comparison. (I disagree on completion percentage not being important. Its a big part of Montanas greatness. (Under Elways career % once, as a rookie.) And I honestly didn't vote on this one.

Of course Roger's is better. In 11 seasons he had 2958 attempts and 1658 completed passes. While Elway had in 16 seasons 7250 atempts and 4128 completions. Roger's att. and comp. added together are a tad bit more than Elway's total comp. So the less you throw the higher your completion % will be!!!
