I believe he spans the entire range of the piano. Listen to the song and you will see.

Are we talking about 3:37 in the song?

I just played the part on the piano. It goes from D#2 to D#6.

Plus, I hate to state the obvious, but that entire measure was run transposed using a pitch shifting effect...so I doubt Bowie really did more than sing it in the natural key, and they transposed it, or perhaps some very clever tape speed adjustments like Pink Floyd made famous.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong.

His performance on Oh Darlin' is so amazing. I bet being in a crowd of about 50,000+ people, singing the coda from Hey Jude is probably the closest thing to being in heaven as you could ever get on this planet.

Rob Halford without a doubt gets my vote, Bruce Dickinson is a very close second. As long as we're talking in their heyday..

Hard to top Mercury in my book. 10s across the board - vocals, charisma, energy, whatever else counts.

As far as a personal favorite that hasn't been mentioned, one amazing guy these days is Kristoffer Rigg, aka Garm, fronts a variety of Scandanavian bands....most importantly Ulver and Arcturus. Great voice, great with tons of styles, huge presence. Kind of like the European Mike Patton.

Just throwing them out there. Didn't think I saw them listed yet, but I didn't read every post either.

I don't get the Freddie Mercury love. He wouldn't make my top 50 but I do like Morrison. I've never heard of the other guys you listed.

Well, as far as just straight skill-set as a singer, it's tough to beat Freddie Mercury.

You've never heard of Ozzy Ozbourne?

Lemmy- Motorhead
Rob Halford-Judas Priest
Mike Patton- Faith No More, etc.

Okay, yes I've heard of those guys. I don't think Patton figures into the equation. I liked them but I never thought Patton was a great frontman.

There are few in rock's history that have the range and versatility of Patton.
