PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Travis d'Arnaud threw out only 19.4 percent of would-be base stealers last season. Among catchers with at least 100 games, only Miami's Jarrod Saltalamacchia (19.1 percent) and Oakland's Derek Norris (16.7 percent) fared worse.

Yet d'Arnaud did not want to fault -- at least fully -- the bone spur in his right elbow that was surgically removed on Sept. 30 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. D'Arnaud said the issue only became noticeable to him in August.

"My arm feels looser. I have more range of motion in my elbow," d'Arnaud said Saturday, contrasting the end of last season with how he feels now. "I don't want to make excuses. I still should have made clean throws. You never know, though. It could have cut range of motion, so I couldn't extend all the way."

Been a looooong time since I considered Curtis a viable leadoff candidate.

6th or 7th, he's a great guy to fill the spot. Even 5th. But way too many empty ABs for the top of the order. This was a curse for Ol' Leyland....

I would have been fine with Granderson as leadoff if his OBP was significantly better than any other option... But he was only a .326 last season while Daniel Murphy was a .332 and Lagares was .321... I don't care about strikeouts coming from the lead off as long as his OBP is good...

Either way, they really don't have any good options...

The lack of a leadoff hitter as well as having one of the weakest infield defenses in the league are the 2 major flaws of this team.
