I think the Mariners helped him win that award, but I agree he has been better than what LM remarked.

Yeah, dominating the M's is a real feather in the cap.

1st in WAR, 2nd in WHIP, and 6th in ERA in the American League.

Average.

If McClendon believes it, then it makes perfect sense that he's the guy Z and the front office would want to hire. If he just said it to try to light a fire under the M's hitters, then it makes a little more sense.

Maybe he meant that when he pitched to Mariners his stuff was average?

He looked especially "average" dominating the Tigers and Angels lineups 2 of his last 3 outings, giving up a total of 4 runs in 16 1/3 innings pitched.

In between those 2 starts, all he did was throw a complete game shutout before coming in and throwing 9 innings against the M's without giving up an earned run.

So average.

i'd agree with you up until this year, johnfree.

the past few years, his stuff has been average.

this year, he's found a greater degree of control on all of his pitches. and his slider has become a devastating out pitch. the kid is really good, and is probably just going to get better.

By the way, I watched Keuchel today.

He was a little off, but still pitched pretty damn well in his loss, giving up 3 runs in 6 innings to the O's, who are in the top half of MLB in most offensive stats.

His team scored 1 run for him, btw. That's something that M's fans should understand more than any others when it comes to looking at pitchers.

It brought his ERA up to a whopping 2.70, and increased his WHIP by a massive .04

Knew he's been pitching well and showed some improvement last year (though his ERA didn't reflect that), but I was a bit surprised to see his ERA is in line with his FIP/xFIP (2.74/2.77). He has a decent K/9, strong walk rate, and an extremely high groundball rate.

I haven't seen him more then 2 times this year (don't really tune into Astros games yet. Waiting for more of their prospects to come up). I was just looking at his stuff from a statistical and nothing really popped out. I assumed he was controlling his pitches well, but didn't know about the slider.

Why are we talking about Dallas Keuchel so heavy in a Mariners forum? Who cares? he's on the Lastros.

Baseball fans appreciate good players outside of the organization, and talk about them sometimes.

It's fine that you don't. No reason to be a douche to those who do, though.

I really love when people either misinterpret or don't understand what was said. All McClendon said was THAT day he looked average against us.

I really love when people either misinterpret or don't understand what was said. All McClendon said was THAT day he looked average against us.

He started with "I saw average stuff", and he continued with "at some point you've got to stop giving credit to average pitchers."

There is zero ambiguity there, and he never qualified anything with "on the day" or anything remotely similar to that.

“I saw average stuff today,” McClendon said. “We didn’t swing the bats very good. At some point, you gotta stop giving credit to average pitchers. That becomes a broken record. At some point, you have to start swinging the bats.”

That is the exact quote from McClendon referring to Dallas Keuchel.

Incorrect. You added a word to what McClendon actually said.

I'll go ahead and go by his exact quote rather than go by others literally putting words in his mouth.

Anyhoo, it was his 2nd complete game in 3 starts where he didn't give up and earned run, and he has just been plugging along his average self ever since, really.

Currently in the AL:

6th in ERA with a 2.50
4th in WHIP with 1.03
1st (tied with Buehrle and Tanaka) in WAR
6th in Quality Starts
6th in DIPS
