There are two thing to be said here.

The first is a hearty L.O.L. at the redskins, who not only butchered the Kirk situation but also you just KNOW they gave up way too much for Smith and it may even have been a first rounder, in which case many people I know might just become apoplectic, although that's their fault for being skins fans.

The second is that Alex Smith despite being a little...limited, shall we say, is by all accounts a good dude and a decent qb. I can only imagine how pissed he was to learn this news lol!

Redskins acquired QB Alex Smith from the Chiefs in exchange for undisclosed compensation.

The Kansas City Star broke the news, but has no details on what the Skins are getting back. No trades can become official until the first day of the new league year on March 14. But the Star says the agreement is a done deal, saving the Chiefs $17 million under the salary cap. The blockbuster trade will ensure Kirk Cousins hits free agency, where he'll likely become the NFL's highest-paid player. It also locks in Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs' 2018 starting quarterback. In 2017, Smith set career highs in touchdown-to-interception ratio (26:5) and yards per attempt (8.0). He turns 34 in May, so a quarterback will stay in play for the Redskins at the No. 13 overall pick.

What is it mean by saying it is unknown what the Redskins are getting back. They're getting Smith. It's what the Chiefs get that's in question.

He shined against the Patriots? What game were you watching? The lack of trust the coaching staff had in him was obvious and was a major reason why they're not in Minnesota

He threw for the 4th most passing yards against the Patriots in the playoffs in the last 10 years. Compared to how he usually plays, that’s MVP caliber type stats. Besides, it was a foregone conclusion that Bortles wasn’t leading the Jags to a comeback victory against the Patriots.

The Jags if they decide to upgrade the QB position. But, the owner loves BB.

Last I read Elway was enamoured by Baker Mayfield. Smokescreen?

He is but Cousins is a franchise guy and the closest to a sure thing you can get in Free Agency. If Elway can get Cousins I think he will and the only way he drafts a QB at #5 is if Cousins goes insane and demands money only the Browns can give him.

Cousins is on record saying it's not all about $$$, wants to win etc...So we will see. I got a weird feeling he ends up in Cleveland cause like you said, they can offer the most $$$.

I kept saying it on the Redskin board and they got pissed at me and banned me so I’ll say it here. You can throw for 4500-5000 yards all you want but if you can’t win games or be seen as a leader on and off the field, you ain’t sticking around too long. Smith led the Chiefs to be contenders again. No surprise the Redskins have moved past Kirk Cousins. Cousins can’t even lead the Redskins to a winning record over three years. With that said, the Redskins didn’t help Cousins much either. No running game, bad o-line with no depth, WRs can’t catch the ball, defense sucks against the run. Just bad all around.
Kirk Cousins is probably a better quarterback than Smith. The Redskins would have liked to keep Cousins, but they are very stupid, so they offered him a half-assed contract after last year and prayed he would take it.

Cousins is very smart (contrary to popular belief) and had no intention of signing with them, ever. This news probably has him partying tonight, while Alex Smith must be (very) pissed off lol!

Redskins signed QB Alex Smith to a four-year extension through 2022.

As part of the agreement on the trade to get Smith to D.C., the Skins are giving Smith some long-term security, as he had just one year left on his contract through 2018. He's now under contract through his age-38 season. It very well may be his last contract. The Redskins didn't seem to have a prayer to re-sign free agent Kirk Cousins after burning so many bridges with their "franchise" quarterback. Acquiring Smith and paying him less was the next best thing.
