We beat Detroit's ace, IN DETROIT, last night, let's put the Tigers on the brink tonight!

Starting for Detroit will be 29 year old Doug Fister, who posted a 1.308 season WHIP, his worst in 2 and a fraction
years with Detroit. He was with Seattle for 2 and a fraction seasons before becoming a Tiger.

This will be his 7h career post-season start. he had a 1.276 WHIP in his 6 earlier post-season efforts.

For us will be Jake Peavy, who has a very respectable 1.156 WHIP in his 64 2/3 innings with Boston to date.

Didn't care for giving up Iglesias when we made the trade to get him, but the deal is looking better to me now.

GO RED SOX! :yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

Are those season numbers or just post-season numbers?

And what about the 2 pitchers' K/BB ratios and WHIPs? Those are more reliable than Ks by themselves or ERA, IMO.

It's the little things in this series. Im happy Jackson and Hunter didn't strike out in the first. Helped that Jackson isn't even due up in the second. :)

Big opportunity wasted for the Red Sox in the top of the 2nd. Good pitching job by Fister though.

Debatable strike 3 call on us just now, but close enough to be understandable even though it didn't thrill me.

Plenty of time left, so it's far from tragic or any reason to question the ump's motives.

Good inning by the Tigers. Peavy wasn't in control and then some bad defense by Pedrioa which usually doesn't happen. Looks like it will be a tied series.

It's early yet.

The Red Sox score most of their runs late in games these days, remember?

True.

But if you are going off on how the bats have been doing so far in this series it doesn't look good. When you get into a deep hole like this you are going to be more aggressive. When you become more aggressive you are going to chase pitches and in a way make the life of the pitcher that much easier. They still have to make Fister work and get into their bullpen if we do that then we might be alright.

The Red Sox rarely get that over-aggressive, which is a big part of the reason for their late game success.

Having to wait seemingly forever for the runs can be irritating, but we just have to dope with it.

Detroit has had Peavy's number for the last couple years.

I'm glad people are getting to see Fister pitch on national TV. He kind of gets lost being on a rotation with Scherzer, Verlander and Sanchez, but he is extremely tough to square the ball up on.

Fister has been pitching damn well in this game. He has gotten the Red Sox to swing and miss and getting the first pitch strike. The bats for the Red Sox still need to come alive, I just don't know where the offense has gone. But Detroits starting pitching gets a lot of credit for shutting them down.

Detroit's starting pitchers have been unreal the last couple years in the ALDS and ALCS. It seems like they turn it up a notch when the playoffs role around. With the emergence of Scherzer and Sanchez (who were the Tigers best two pitchers in the regular season) and the Verlander of old showing up the last month or so of the season -- Fister is often the odd man out and forgotten about.

I do have to say though -- I am kind of shocked at how they almost completely shut down Boston's lineup. I would never count Boston out, as they have one of the deepest lineups in baseball with professional hitters up and down the order.

Happy to see the Tigers bats wake up tonight, with some help from Peavy as well. Still a long series to go. I think it ends up going to 7, which is what I originally predicted.
