I'm stunned to see this. Went to bed after Rafa won the 3rd expecting him to easily win the 4th set to win the match.

Also Halep eliminated by some qualifier. Wtf is going on?

Like I said, the tourney is too early in the year when players are not in game shape (despite their rigourous training) and conditions are oppressive. I would move it out 4-6 weeks.

But isn't that a part of what makes this Grand Slam unique compared to the others? The fact that several nobodies can come into this tournament and a make a deep run?

A tiny handful of players can afford to take extended time off from tournament play from November-January. The overwhelming majority are working and training hard year round, and yes, playing in tournaments.

The players who come in unprepared have nobody to blame but themselves, and it would be silly to adjust the entire Asian-Pacific summer tennis schedule for them. School starts up for Australians and much of the Asia-Pacific right after the Aussie Open final, almost exactly like it does for our US Open.

Agassi benefited for years by training hard through the winter holidays, running up and down the hills in Las Vegas, lifting like crazy, and training like a maniac.

Yes, we notice a handful of elite millionaire players go out early every year at the Aussie Open because they're unprepared, and a mirror can show them who is responsible, not a calendar.

Love everything about the Aussie Open, and hope they keep the tournament in January forever.

Anyhoo, loved seeing Sock get pushed. Fritz looks very fit. Maybe we'll finally have an American who gets with the modern game, and takes diet and exercise as seriously as top contenders. Sock could maximize his talent a lot more if he did. It's amazing how his forehand explodes off the court. That crazy topspin bounce would make it like trying to hit a rock up around their shoulders all the time for his opponent.

This was the danger match for Rafa. He knew it too.

It is nice to see, but I do not want to see matches determined by the weather.

I mean that happens here and at the US Open. Nothing you can do to change it. Sometimes here in NYC during the Open it is in the lower 90's but really humid. Playing in extreme heat is a part of the Aussie & US Open unfortunately

True but not as often. Plus playing at the end of Septmeber can get very cold at night so I can see playing the US open when they do. The weather is still more often to be temperate at that time of year. In Australia however, The middle to end of January is the hottest time of the year. There will be oppressive days every year.

dolgopolov can be a real pest, and his whacked out service motion can be oddly effective sometimes.

hope he gives fed a little bit of a workout in preparation for tougher opponents in the near future.

Outside of the 2nd set, pretty straight forward win for Fed

The tournament on the Men's side begins tomorrow for me. Since seeded men aren't prone to lose in the first 2 rounds as seeded women are. That usually set up some good 3rd round matches. Tomorrow we have Fed vs Dimitrov, Kyrgios vs Berdych , Garcia- Lopez VS Kei, Thiem VS Goffin, and Cilic vs Bautista Agut.

Surprise that Dimitrov/Fed is not the night session as they gave that to Kyrgios vs Berdych

Keys dropped the first set. She needs this match. She would be dropping a lot of points by losing so early. She made it to the SF against Serena last year if I recall correctly

Raonic/Robredo in another tiebreak. Raonic took the 1st set tiebreak.

On serve currently in the 2nd set tiebreak

I'm not really surprised. It's one Australia's bright hopes for the future against a top 6 seed.

Roddick was getting the same treatment at the US Open back in 2000-2001 at the US Open. And back when we had a bunch of Americans who could contend for slams, they'd always get the night matches, even over #1 seeds. We're just not used to in in the US anymore because our only legit hope for making it deep at a major for the past 5 years has been Serena.

I can't stand watching Raonic play. Tiebreaks even against old man Robredo. Yawn.

I was sad to see Pospisil go out against an even more boring player to watch (Simon).

Sock isn't fit enough to be a consistent performer at majors. All up to him to put in the work because he has the weapons to be top 10.

SOOOO happy Hewitt is done. I was very happy when I read that particular result.
