Despite having the best rotation ERA they lacked a dominant guy. Samardzija may be that guy. Someone that can match up with Verlander in a Game 5 who has booted them out the last two years.

After getting swept by the Tigers this week they probably feel this is the best way to finally get by them

I love the move for them. Their top prospect may be a stud someday, but you only get so many chances to win it all and you should go for it. Plus, if you know what you are doing, and Beane does, you replace him with top prospect down the road.

I'm am becoming more of an A's fan everyday (a long ways back from being an M's fan still). As soon as we are out, A's will be my team to root for.

The A's really want that division title locked down early, don't they?

Yup and I love that. I wish it was Mariners doing it, but I love a team going all out to win it. Props to them.

This just ups the importance of the Mariners needing to make a power move.

It does, but that is not a Mariner specialty. They overvalue their prospects and other teams don't value them at all. Bad combo.

Not a blockbuster, but I would look into Allen Craig.

Agreed, I also don't trust this front office making a big trade, or even a small trade.

I actually think Allen Craig would be a huge move. He's one of the more underrated players on that Cardinals lineup. He's having a down year this year, but from 2011-2013 he hit .312/.364/.500 with 46 HR in 328 games. I believe he is simply in a prolonged slump and will eventually come out of it. Adding Craig would be big IMO.

I personally see the OF, 1B and DH each as open positions. Logan Morrison is hitting well, the Mariners also have the flexibility of putting him at DH or OF. If the Mariners added someone like Craig, they could put him at DH, I don't have much faith in Corey Hart, he hasn't shown much this year.

As far as Ortiz goes, it wouldn't happen in a million years. I almost can't see the Red Sox unloading vets simply because that city expects a winner. With the attitude of expecting winning baseball in Boston, it would be strange for the Red Sox to ship off a mainstay like Ortiz. I think he wants to retire there, and it appears he could have another year or two left in him. His BA is a bit down this year, but his OBP is still solid and he's still knocking them out of the ball park at a nice rate, could play until he hits 40.

I really dont think this A's move changes anything from an M's perspective. Either way the need is a RH OF bat. That doesnt change with this trade. The last thing I would want to happen is for Jack Z to make an overreaction trade because the A's made a move. This isnt an arms race. If anything root for the A's to beat teams that are in the wild card race with us. They are looking at October, they could care less about the division

Looks like Samardzija will make his A's debut tommorrow. Means his next start is projected to be Friday at Safeco

Which, if it happens that way, would come against Felix. Great match-up.

Ughhhh I'm not sure I want Dayan Viciedo. He's young and he can hit 20 HRs with a .260 average, but his walk rate, running and defense are all beyond disgraceful. Viciedo is average (if that) at the plate, but terrible at everything else. He would be an upgrade over Ackley in the lineup, but a regression at everything else.

If we were to trade for Viciedo, I wouldn't want to give up much for him and I'd rather have him as a full time DH to maximize his value.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Martin Prado could be an option. He can play OF, 3B, 2B and 1B. He is solid defensively, and a career .291 hitter. He's only hitting .268 this year, but that is still an upgrade over what we've got right now and he has a high ceiling as indicated by his 3 seasons in which he hit above .300.

Although after hearing that Mariners ownership nixed deals with Nelson Cruz and Kendrys Morales during free agency, I'm not sure they're willing to add Prado's $10m salary to their payroll.

Alfonso Soriono was just dfa'd by the Yankees, I'm sure he could perform better than Ackley, if only a little.

Was thinking the same thing. It also hurt him because he was platooned in right with Ichiro and some other guy.
