Which of those two numbers do you find to be the more important ChrisPozz? To me the 10 yard split means so much more since the game is played so much in that 10 yard area and having that explosion in that short area can make up for getting caught out of position.

Depends on the prospect and what you're looking for. I can tell a story using either number including if I feel like his run or runs wasn't/weren't a good representation of who that player is based on something I saw during his run (technique, mistakes, etc.).

Ideally I'd get both numbers because they both tell a story and those stories should be linked together. Honestly, I'd like to see a 10-time, a 20-time, AND a 40 time but usually I don't like how players finish their runs because they often begin to de-accelerate and then I don't like how much stock a fan puts into that 40 time because of how the finish a lot of these players have. So I might knock the 40 for that reason.

Again, every number I look at is a puzzle piece to me. Not every number means the same thing for every player. I don't put the same value with a 40 time or a shuttle time with all players. And I absolutely NEED to see how a player looked to get to that number because often there'll be a misstep or something that went into that number.

If you could guarantee me that all of these players looked SMOOTH throughout every test and then it was just a matter of getting a number and telling a speed/quickness story then it would be so much easier. Then a 4.40 would be the same as all other 4.40s across the board. Not all of them are the same. You have to look at a player performing and figure out why it might not have been smooth or why it looked the way it did with the number attached to it. Sometimes it's not always because that player is fast or slow, smooth, or not smooth.

I probably gave you way more than you were bargaining for there but hopefully that answered your question.

You did and I appreciate it. I agree too much is put into that final number on the forty. When I am hearing the announcers say that a player knocking 5 1/100's of a second off their forty can be the difference between which round they are drafted in that tells me teams are way too focused on that final number. I look at the top 2 safeties in this draft with Ha-Ha and Pryor. They are very different players and what they bring to the field. So to me trying to decide which one is better by a 40 number is just ridiculous.

I guess for me I do put a little more into the 10 yard split than the final 40 time if there is a number I am focused on. To me especially with defensive backs that first step is the most important and helps in determining how well a corner will do on a certain play. Slower top end corners can still thrive if they do well with that first step and putting themselves in position. Yes I like the ability for a corner to recover if possible but I would rather have a corner with a good fast first step that can be in position from step one. Now given fast first step is only a small piece of the puzzle as game tape should show whether that fast first step is actually going in the right direction to make a play.

No surprise on Gilbert- dude can fly. I'm slightly surprised on Verrett and Roby- thought they were fast, but not quite that fast.

Verrett to me is the surprise of the group. Roby was expected to possibly be a 4.3 kind of guy. His speed is a big reason he is even considered a 1st round pick. His game tape to me shows a 3rd round guy. Teams though fall in love with that athleticism and think they can coach them up to get to that level of a 1st round prospect. Verrett though definitely increased his draft stock or at least confirmed what was on tape of a very good corner with great athleticism. A couple of inches taller and he is a top 10 pick.

I noticed Dennard ran a low 4.4. That should pretty much lock him up as the top cb

I thought the only knock of Verrett was size. I was never concerned with his speed.

I think the question was did he have enough speed to make up for his lack of size. I think people expected him to run fast but he was one that needed to have a great time to still be considered a 1st round pick. Say he ran a 4.5 forty instead of the 4.4 forty that he did. That would cause some teams to pause a bit on him wondering if his skills were good enough against college receivers but against the bigger faster receivers in the NFL could he still keep up.

I guess to me he ran what I expected but he had a lot of pressure on him for the forty in my opinion. There were just some guys that had more pressure to run a fast forty like Verrett because of his size, Dennard because it was his biggest question mark, and Roby because his speed is one of the few reasons he is even considered a 1st round guy.

Verrett's coverage skills are better than anyone else in the draft IMO. He's like a shadow. It would make a ton of sense to start him in SF this year at one of the CB spots since the team is already good & needs great play right away (like last year with my guy Reid).

So Adidas gave Brandin Cooks the $100K for running the fastest forty in their shoes. Dri Archer must have been running in some Nikes.

And he can play the slot, right? I'm very interested to see how this draft shakes out, but I'm leaning toward CB with our first pick. Especially if we see a run on WRs.
