Because he veto'ed the CLE trade because he didn't want them to pick up his option year since he will be leaving so much money on the table. He wants a new deal at market value, understandably.

Part of the reason he wanted this was due to their commitment to another catcher as their starter for next season. If they picked up the option, not only would he be playing below market value, his value as a FA in 2017 would plummet. This makes perfect sense to me, and I call it logical/practical for him to have made this decision.

JD is probably looking at him as a DH replacement for Prince
Offensively we really have an opening at catcher once Choo is back, acquiring Beltran once again creates inflexibility in the lineup by acquiring a player that really only plays one position

He said it was because Cleveland would be asking him to play 1b/dh a lot.

I hadn't heard taht. I heard him say it was because he wanted assurances they wouldn't pick up the option.

I didn't say it wasn't logical. I said he would be disgruntled if we picked it up if he obviously doesn't want it picked up.

Does he not realize that's half of his appeal? No one is giving the Brewers a package they want for a rental, not really his problem, but basically the Brewers need to accept a smaller package if assurances are made that the option won't be picked up... Bc that seriously hampers his value

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we make a deal for a starter that we didn't hear about yet

I wish that was true but I have a feeling we will be stuck with Prince next year as our DH. So I feel sure it is as a catcher.

He didn't say he didn't want it picked up by any team. But he had Cleveland on the teams where he could refuse to go in the first place. And romeo and I gave you the reasons why he didn't want it picked up by them.

He may well balk at any club and the option year. We don't know this yet, and he may leverage his situation into a new contract.

Ok this may be me reading too much into it, but I swear this past hour is the first I've heard of the Astros being in the market for a catcher, and I believe it's them trying to fuck up the Rangers attempt at Lucroy.

Honestly, he has zero leverage except to those 8 no trade teams. So he used that leverage with one and they wouldn't budge so he scuttled the deal. If he comes to Texas he has none of that leverage. So will he be content with taking 1/3 of what he could get if the option year wasn't there and he stayed with MKE (the tender is $17M or something). If he is a FA he makes much more than the $5M option. It isn't a stretch to think he would be disgruntled over the option. However, it is going to get picked upwherever he is.

Castro is gone after this year, so they really do need one.

Didn't realize the numbers you've just presented. Good points.

The Indians couldn't guarantee him playing time next season...as everyone would be back healthy, etc. That's why he vetoed the trade.

Yeah Lucroy option will be picked up regardless. I agree wit the reports that Rangers have a package deal but Brewers are still shopping him without another of their players involved.

Maybe we are the fallback

Although not reported OHIO state income and Cleveland income tax may have been an unreported factor. But main thing was losing value due to 1B usage. That was reported
