DeBoer will do well in San Jose. Get that team to the playoffs, and I think he can out-coach other teams.
2012 playoff run, he did just that against Philly and NY. Nobody picked the Devils to beat Philly and the Rangers that year.

its funny that the sharks i believe got a 3rd rounder when the oilers signed mcclean.

the pens got a 3rd rounder when buffalo signed byslyma.

we didn't get anything when the sharks signed pete?

i really dont believe in "paying" a third round pick to take someone's fired employee. the trade off is you hire the fired employee and that guy comes off your books.

paul maclean is sitting and eating up payroll is ottawa who doesn't have much money to begin with. they want a pick for him? i would say no thanks let him eat up your money.

if this team was young i would say i'm down for bringing in a "new" nhl coach but since we aren't young yet....i say we just get someone that we can dump in a year or so when we do get young.

I think its because his contract was up this season. Bylsma still had one more year.
Tortorella still has another 3-4 years left. Stay away. Not worth a 3rd round pick for that guy.

i dont like torts at all buuuuuuuut seeing how this roster HAS to turn over so much before they become successful again as long as he is "free" i dont care if torts is the coach. i just dont want him here when the team becomes younger (2 years time)

once elias/zubrus/ruutu/gionta are gone then bring in a real coach and build the team around him

His shot blocking game plan would probably force our older players to retire quicker. If the team continues to play poorly, at least we have his post game interviews to look forward to. And, Larry Brooks would probably love to see Torts back in the area.
There are some positives no doubt.

Would take Torts over McLellan any day of the week. Guy can have some success before his message starts to wear off on the players.

Even though he played for the Devils it was only a brief stint. This would definitely be out of left field and typical of the Devils. I really can't see him being here for more then 2 years. Whoever takes this nj job is going to be in a bad spot. No playoffs next is a realistic possibility but year two they should have dead wood off this team and players from this draft coming into playing. Playoffs a must two years from now and Phil hously will get us there?

Who would you prefer? At least he has coaching experience, he's not a retread coach that's been with 10 teams, we're not in a win now situation, who's to say he won't succeed? I'm curious why you're hesitant about this one?

I am kind of hoping for a coach out of nowhere. Tired of the same recycled coaches going team to team.
Team is a longshot to make the playoffs next year. Would not mind Housley at all.

I know he's a "new" coach but it just seems like a safe unsexy pic. Would think people are weary of new coaches after mac

I don't know. I am definitely a fan of this. With MacLean, it was kind of forced for him to be a coach. Media, fans, everybody wanted him.
Housley played only a few games with the Devils. He isn't another guy with Montreal roots. He is a USA guy, USA hall of famer, also led the USA under 20 team to a championship in 2013 when you got favorites like Canada and Russia.
I see names like Hynes and I have no problem with that, but to me its like Shero is just bringing in guys he worked with in the past.
Like I said, he is not another recycled coach bouncing from team to team.
Coaching is one of the toughest jobs to crack. See MacLean. Nobody will ever hire him as a coach again.
Housley would be out to prove himself. Expectations next season will be most likely low. If he exceeds them, he makes Shero look brilliant.

Now seems that Housley is not the likely candidate and Hynes or Reirden are the favorites for the job.

These rumors change every 12 hours or so.

One thing I do believe is that if it isn't announced before the finals it wont be...at least not on a game day until after. NHL hates anything that takes away from the finals

Right. I did read that somewhere earlier this morning. Either we know today/tomorrow, or wait until after the finals.

I believe the Devils are the last team with a coaching vacancy so there's no real rush to bring in someone immediately now.
