Took some time to collect my thoughts so here they are:

-The trophy case goes empty another year. If you're like me, that doesn't hurt as much because you've accepted the fact we won't win one with this coaching staff. I don't think Beamer has the right mindset for it. Look at the coaches that have. All are task masters. Beamer is like your grandpa that gives you a dollar every time you see him. Still, its nice to dream.

-Both sides were absolutely terrible today. Poor execution, little effort. Not one good thing to hang your hat on. If I'm a coach, I don't even bother to point out stuff done well this game (if they can find any). Beat it into the players heads that they played like shit and its unacceptable.

-Some of you beat me to it, but I was thinking during the game its time to move Exum back to safety. 3 games and he hasn't looked good at all at corner. He was a pretty solid safety last year. Bonner hasn't been that good either. So I say switch Exum and Bonner, but platoon Bonner's DB slot. At least we'll just have one weakspot as opposed to two (theoretically).

-It appears this defense isn't all that great. Kyle Fuller is great, everyone else, not so much.

-You know in the off season when everyone was excited that our D-line went 2-deep? Turns out "2-deep" means 8 average guys, none are that are great. They've gotten very little pressure on the QB this year and aren't all that great plugging holes in the run game.

-Logan Thomas has regressed. I said earlier during the game whatever George Whitfield taught him in the offseason, he needs to forget. He's only completing 54% of his passes and his mechanics are pretty poor. He's sailing a lot of balls. He's actually getting decent pass protection. He hasn't been sacked much, nor is he running for his life. But he is locking onto receivers, missing check downs, and missing easy throws. It's also discouraging to see that he struggles when running the normal offense and only seems comfortable in a hurry up mode, when only a few select plays are ran.

-The run game is a big issue. Not only is the O-line pretty poor at holding blocks and getting a push, what holes they do make are being totally missed by the backs. This has been evident through 3 games now. If we don't have a run game, we have zero shot at winning games because we certainly can't depend on Thomas' passing at this point

-Only bright spot is this loss doesn't kill the season. Pretty much like every year, the ACC is still open. But right now we're a lot closer to 4 or 5 losses than the Orange Bowl. There's a cheesy Nike(?) commercial airing that has teens losing a championship and using it as motivation all summer to train with sayings like "Remember this hurt" as the monologue. Welp, we need to remember this ass kicking every day of the season from here on out

Being at the game today and watching the Standford USC game right now shows the stark difference between a real team and a team that looks like it is still in Spring ball. Th posive was that we had once nice punt return.
On Offense we couldn't run the ball. The O-line was no help there. Passing it seemed like Thomas and the receivers were on different pages with two of his INTs being on passes thrown to areas of the field where there were no VT players to be found for 10-15 yards. And as said above Thomas was sailing a lot of passes and was off-target on a lot of plays where our receivers had position
Defense our front seven could not stop the run. There was a lot of attempts to arm tackle that led to 3-5 extra yards being gained each play. It really just seemed like they just needed to get back to the fundamentals.
I expect there will be improvement, but i do not know how much we can change before conference games start up.

run defense was terrible, but where was the pass rush? gayle got 1 sack, other than that no pressure. hard for me to see an all-acc DE right there so far this year, healthy or not. our blitz was terrible as well, we rarely even got pressure on heavy blitzes. really perplexing and worrying game.

Sometimes you just have a bad game, I don't see things as negatively as everyone else here. I'm sure after the JMU loss everyone was in an even worse state of mind, and that season turned out well (except for the bowl game). I was really shocked by the defense though, particularly the lack of pressure and all the arm tackles. I never saw us as a championship contender. On the plus side, looks like Thomas is definitely staying next year unless he drastically improves, you can't take that kind of accuracy to the pros. Next season we might be able to go the distance if our O-Line is up to it, which is a big if.

This is exactly what I was thinking. LT isn't accurate or consistent enough to go to the NFL. Maybe it's better for VT if he takes two years to get there.

The most troubling part of today's game was the defense. They looked great against GT, but they were relatively ineffective today.

Entirely different running offense style though. Pitt punches you in the mouth and GT dives at your ankles.

Helen Keller would have looked like the real deal against our D today.

The thing that worries me about today was the defense. The offense I knew about

Watching the Texas game just makes me more upset because Mack Brown is the anti-Beamer. Two years ago he knew what he needed to do to get Texas back to the top after a bad season. He made sweeping changes to his coaching staff and now it looks like Texas is headed in the right direction. If Beamer is serious about winning a national championship he should know what he has to do if there aren't some serious leaps made by the team the rest of the season.

But the coach's job is to get you prepped for this week's opponent. If they're a solid unit, they should be able to adjust.

One thing I've noticed this year is an improvement in the discipline and effectiveness of special teams. That's a bright spot, anyway.

Texas can also get and pay whatever assistant they want to hire.

Todd Washington would make a great OL coach. I feel like both O'Cain and Stinespring bring something to the table. The offense the last two years was not a fluke. HOwever, I am not sure what Newsome adds anymore.

You are setting yourself up for a tremendous disappointment if you continue with that pipe dream. Doesn't matter if our OL is improved or not (which it likely won't be since we'll be replacing many starters), this current staff cannot go the entire season without some type of hiccup; whether that hiccup involves the team not being prepared or Beamer making some colossal bone-headed in-game coaching decision.

Agree. O'Cain and Stinespring aren't what I'd like but at least they aren't completely worthless
