There has been talk of a system being created where the top team would get an automatic BYE into round #2. That approach is far more drastic, and poses many more problems, but it's out there and has been debated among the hockey experts.

It's always easy to dump on someone else's ideas. Of course, nobody has an original thought of their own.

Once you get past the "this is stupid" remarks we can get down to the more interesting questions like:

Q: Why would someone propose this?
Q: What is wrong with what we have now?
Q: If there is something wrong, how else could this be done better?

My belief is, there needs to be more separation between #1 and #8. Mark my words, if the #8 team wins, viewers will SHUT OFF the television. That hurts the NHL big time. That is lost revenue folks. Fans want to see a clash of the titans, not a clash of the Cinderellas.

Instead of shooting down my idea so quickly, try an approach that uses EMPATHY. Put yourself in the shoes of St. Louis or New York. You are first in your conference. You busted your butt for 82 games to get there. You face a team with 15-20 fewer wins than you have. In other pro sports they wouldn't even be there. So you get home ice advantage. Big deal. The Rangers may get wiped out by a red hot Sabres team. Season over. What? Season over. What? 50+ wins or whatever the top team has and season over. What? Can you see why I might have a problem with that?

My ideas have never been discussed on the air on sports talk radio programs or even by parents because....well....I'm a big mouthed loser who's been running at the mouth and saying nothing since birth.. Have yours treated you this way? Didn't think so.

So using your moronic logic, since the Penguins will lead the league in goals scored this season, i think they should be given an automatic 1-0 lead (a free goal) in every playoff game this post-season.

I think the #8 team should get the auto-win. It would make it more dramatic/exciting and give hope to all the underdogs wishing for the top teams to get knocked out to improve their chances.
