Need to? No, not really. ...
lol, I obviously didn't mean it as their season is over, nor even their playoff hopes are dashed. It was meant as in they are due. They aren't THAT bad that they should be beaten by anyone 7 games in a row.

Noelvi, Arroyo, Stoudt, and Andrew Moore for Castillo.

That's a lot going to CIN, and puts any Ohtani rumor to bed, but this is the best SP on the market and that's what prospects are for, so good to get him.

If they are giving up that much of the farm for him, there is basically zero chance they were also going after Soto or Ohtani.

I'm fine if they pickup a mid level bat as well, but they can't just add one arm. Yes, it's an outstanding arm and one that bodes well for more than this year.

Yeah, puts any Soto or Ohtani rumors to bed, but I'm a fan of this move. Odds are 1 of those 4 lives up to his potential, and Castillo is a proven commodity and a huge need right now. I'm fired up for that move

Ray - Castillo - Gilbert in a 3 game series. I love our chances there.

I always remember the 2005 White Sox rotation absolutely dominating that postseason. It was almost unfair that year.

From that Larry Stone piece I linked earlier...

Fortunately, there are numerous other avenues for Dipoto to improve the team, starting with a run at one of the two impact starting pitchers on the market, Luis Castillo of Cincinnati and Frankie Montas of Oakland. Both would require a prospect package less onerous than Soto’s, and would give the Mariners as formidable a short-series rotation as just about any team in MLB. It would also make it easier to slow-play George Kirby’s innings to have him poised for the postseason, and give them cover in case a starter gets injured.

Of course Larry also pointed out they MUST improve their hitting as well.

Does anyone think Hani and possibly Kelenic alone provide enough to never see Toro again in a meaningful game the rest of the way?

Haniger if healthy is like adding a top bat, yes. Health is obviously the big question, but look what the guy did at the end of last year. Put the team on his back.

I'm sure a bat will be added, but less likely it's a big one now that Drury wasn't a part of this deal.

Castillo is a good get, and I wanted them to add pitching depth, but the offense is really what's holding this team back right now (Ray's starts against Houston aside). Hope they still can upgrade the O as well.

I was reading an article only a week or two ago (maybe was posted on here, not sure) that Marte has really been struggling in Everett and his numbers over the course of the year have actually regressed month to month. He's still young so anything can happen, but the writer didn't seem to think he was the prospect everyone thought so it was probably good to trade him while he still has high perceived value.

Edit: was just looking and it seems like Marte has kind of turned things around in Everett over the last month, so I guess we'll see how things shake out in the coming years.

Well yeah, that was the point. They will pickup something closer to Santana kind of move again than a big bopper.

I don't trust either Hani nor Lewis to still be playing at season's end. It's just their story. Kelenic could come back up better and add something if he's not actually traded by Tue. Again, not a big upgrade, but could add some pop over the lessor options on this pathetic bench.

Team loses 11-1, mood was high in the dugout after the game because of the trade.

Flex on the hill tomorrow and the buzz after this trade. Enough for a win?

The thing with being a fan is that people will be pissed if they don't make a move. And also be pissed if they don't.
Damn if you do, damn if you don't situation while completely forgot to look at the bigger picture.

The players the M's gave up are "prospects" -- and there's no telling if they'll pan out. If they end up panning out for the other org great! But you make the move if the chip is right.

In the end, M's traded for an established pitcher to reinforce the pitching staff. Should be happy with this trade.

But it really doesn’t put the Ohtani or Soto trade to bed. They still have what Washington is looking for with Hancock, Kelenic. Lewis. Ford and White. Got the best pitching prospect after the futures game, Kelenic who is a star in the making, Ford is a top prospect, White and most importantly Lewis (who is the definition of needing a new environment)

Kelenic is damaged goods until he isn't.
Lewis is wearing a 40 year old's body. Change of location doesn't heal 2 major knee injuries.
And White is a glove who can't hit who's blocked at the major league level.

None of that adds up to a Soto or Ohtani. Other teams will blow that offer out of the water.

Imagine where you were in August last season, and someone told you in a year you'd have Ray and Castillo in the rotation without giving up Gilbert, Kirby, or Hancock. You'd be doing backflips just like I would.

I'm happy they picked up Castillo. Did they pay too much? Probably, but I'd rather that than not get the pieces we need to setup for going after more than a WC this year, but getting the club in position to contend for the division next year.

They still have work to do for both goals. I don't know if I would give up the farm for Soto or Ohtani after this deal. They need farm depth to sustain mid/ long-term winning and either of those alone is probably not enough to contend for the WS this year. If they were, then do it.

They need at least a .270+ hitter to add for this WC run. I'd be OK with that, particularly if we could shed Toro or one of our other anchors, but maybe in greedy.

Castillo is a great addition no doubt. But the M's really could use another solid bat AND a new Manager. :D

The best duet calling the M's game was Sims and Dan Wilson. Goldsmith is not on any list as far as I'm concerned.
Goldsmith = :puke: OR :kissass: :pound::pound::pound::suds::suds::suds::clap::clap::clap::clap:
I think Blowers and Sims are pretty good as well.

Funny how much I used to hate Dave Sims, but he really has grown on me. I think it's because Goldsmith is such a prick. I have no issue with two guys giving each other shit because they're friends, but Goldsmith gives everyone shit because he's a dick. I wish they had Rizz call some of the TV games.

Glad they had a solid first and got 3, but it's not enough. Need another good inning somewhere.
