I'm stunned, totally stunned, that people tend to put their financial interests first.

If the schools care so much why not pay for an insurance policy for players they want to play in th these meaningless bowl games.

What's up?! Man, I'm tired of defending him, to be honest. I do not have an issue with it at all. Now, had we made the playoffs and he decided to sit out, yeah, I'd be mad, lol!

Can you specify an instance when that has happened?

Several years ago the Colorado coach either sat his QB or changed his offensive philosophy headed into a bowl game against Alabama (i forget which). That was in the pre-Saban days when Alabama was struggling. Bama barely pulled it out, even though they were playing against a severely handicapped team. That was supposed to help the Buffs get a leg-up on what they would be running the next season. Not sure if it worked or not.

When was this? Perkins era?

Turns out it was the 2007 Independence Bowl. It was actually Nick Saban's first year at Alabama. I had thought it was before Nick, but I was wrong.

I'd probably make a lousy Head Coach but my policy would be if you skip a bowl game and it's a major bowl or a playoff game, then you're off the team. Now. No training table, no weight room, no damn anything. Anyone who has benefited enough from playing in my program for 2-3 years to go pro and doesn't want to stick around has my blessings on a great professional career but you're done here.

If you run for office, I’ll vote for you.

I get what you’re saying and semi agree with you. But almost no player will skip a playoff game voluntarily. It would take a really strange situation or something of that ilk for that to happen.

Also once you start kicking players off the team for them looking out for their futures you take a huge risk in recruiting. Not sure how many kids are going to see that as a plus in this day and age.

Skyler Howard won 10 games his senior year at WVU. Not sure all the fuss over Grier. Talented QB, but not a winner...

Kicked off? Absolutely not. He quit on his own volition and there are repercussions. It's called life. Eat too much and you're a fat bastard. Don't work out and you're unhealthy. Quit the team and you don't get the benefits of being on the team.

Call it whatever you want, you start booting players for “violating” your policy and you wont last long as no kid will want to play for you.

You think Saban's a pushover? Or any great coach? The players will come play for you since you're a great coach and you have a winning program that PUTS GUYS IN THE PROS. Screw the few snowflakes who might be put off by a policy of "Be on the team or get off the team but we are all one team and there is one set of rules." Any good coach would turn this into a positive if someone was trying to use it against him as a negative. If a coach couldn't handle something this easy to refute, he's in the wrong business. The military and business world are helluva lot tougher to survive than living with this simple policy.
