On a related note, apparently Tabata's been beating himself up a lot, which is probably snowballing into his bad performance becoming worse. I think a trip to AAA would do him good, because maybe he'll just cut loose and play there, get his confidence back.

I'm all for giving our young guys a very very long rope.. but Tabata is dogging it in the outfield.....

We could just make Jones our rf and call up Gorky instead to be a defensive replacement.

As for the dates, a team controls a player until they have 6 years of service time, the first 3 for whatever they want to pay you, then 3 with arbitration. The one exception is 'super two', they take some of the 2 years plus guys based solely on service time and give them an extra arbitration year. The date is usually around mid June, so we can call up Marte now and get 6.5 years out of him with no super two, assuming he stays.

He doesn't look like he's dogging it to me. He looks like he's got no confidence and is afraid to take a risk and make a mistake.

Agree Darkstone, I think there is a distinction to be made between flat out not trying, and not being focused, and thus doing everything in a sub-optimal way. I think he needs to go down, get some good ab's under his belt, and regain some confidence/focus.

Go Marte... I still say leave him there until he forces you to call him up... Like when Willie Mays was hitting .422 in the minors before the Giants called him up to the big leagues...

Not saying he is the next mays... but make sure he shows you he has nothing left to learn... I feel like too many kids get called up a season too early...

For the first time all season, Marte played right field last night....

Btw, Gorky is going to join the club today, betting that means a 15 day DL for Barajas.

So now we will be playing with a 3 man bench since there is no way Hurdle lets Gorkys see the field.

Right decision to bring up Hernandez now, considering the All Star break isn't too far away, don't want to bring up Marte for a few days, then have him sit.

Dejan seems to think Marte will be up very shortly, after the All Star break seems logical.

Gorkys can handle himself in the outfield... So he is a defensive replacement if need be I guess.

With Presley hurt, if he goes on the DL I still doubt Marte will get the call.

marte is one yr older, but the youngest at Indy.

tabata is still the second youngest and less than 2 months older that marte. i think we forget how young he is, how accomplished he was, and how he was rushed through because we had crap on the team. hopefully he regroups, as given his age, he still has a very high ceiling, when healthy and not pressing. he does seem teachable with a good baseball IQ.

I think Tabata may be closer to 33 than 23. I don't see a high ceiling at all, and how can anyone say he has a good baseball IQ after watching the Philly series.

if he is 33, you are correct. but if he is 23, that is quite different.

his IQ the last couple years in hte OF, angles, throwing to bases, approach at the plate, patience, strike zone, hustle, going to the opposite field, running the bases, demeanor on the field have all been great.

didnt see the philly series, but he obviously had a couple poor games. he is pressing and seems to be injured and only at 50-70%.
seems since he signed the big contract, he is putting too much pressure on himself to be #21 of yesteryear. he needs to relax and just play to his talent and understanding.

Marte may come up when Fox goes down.

I think your being to kind. The first inning in game one he buried Karsten by repeating throwing to the wrong base. The first inning of game two he ran the Pirates out of possible big inning by trying to score from third on what would have been an infield hit.

go outside of that series though. you cant say that was his mentality last 2 years, and again, assuming he is 23(which facially, he does appear to be).
