Radio guys were doing this but I missed the callers. They were asking you to name your favorite lesser known Redskin, no Riggo or Sonny obviously. Thought it was a pretty good idea.

Mine is Neil Olkewicz. Despite being one of the top 70 all time Redskins he was always under the radar. Every summer they would bring in someone to take his job but when the dust settled Neil was the one standing at the end. You younger guys didn't see it but those early 80's Redskins had one of the best run defenses I've ever seen. It started with Butz and Grant up front but the guy to make it all work was Neil Olkewicz.

Nope. It was Dave Butz and Darryl Grant that made it work. Neil and Kurt Gouvia, and Monte, Wilbur, Mel Kaufman......were the beneficiaries.

If the interior DTs or NG can't keep the OGs from engaging the LBs the defense won't work. If the LBs are free to flow to the ball its all good and the LBs get all the credit, but its the DTs/NG that's doing all the dirty/grunt work.

I'm gonna have to go with Jon Jansen. Dude played some good RT with Chris Samuels. His Achilles ruined his career. Prior to, he was a Pro Bowl caliber OT. Of course, he never made one.

Jansen had a major presence in that locker room as well.

Any good defense needs good line play to allow the LBers to do their job. That is football 101. To diminish Olkie is ridiculous. :2cents:

Yep. They all work together but for some reason Olkie flew under the radar.

Jon Jansen is a tough one for me, I was just thinking about him as I was driving. He was one of my favorites too rock solid, but the end is still bothering me.

He hung around 2 years too long, his last year was an absolute train wreck. Then the team actually took the time for a face to face, I believe at his house, to tell him he was being released rather than doing it the way they do with most players. Obviously it stung but he left so butt hurt, angry that they cut him so late he couldn't catch on with another team. Obviously just another athlete who couldn't accept that it was his time. Then he signed as a bench player in Detroit. After the Lions upset the Redskins he started crowing about how sweet vindication was even though he didn't play a down. That always bugged me.

Cooley might be a bit of a PIA now with his lobbying to be on the team. I heard him do it (first time for me hearing it) but he isn't mad at the team, he just thinks he can still play. He has always supported the Redskins. I agree Jansen's end was sad and kind of pissed you off. We could all name a 100 players who left unhappily when they were cut without even straining the brain too hard.

You know DGF Darryl Grant might be considered a good under the radar guy. Everyone knew Butz because he was so big for the time and Madden always made a big deal out of him but Grant was a hell of a DT also.

Without a doubt. The most excited I may have ever been in my life was when he caught the tipped pass and went into the end zone to send us to the Super Bowl. That and Riggo's run a week later were the tops for me.

My vote was darrel young too. I think I'm way too young for this topic. I'll say mike sellers. Guess I like fullbacks.

I saw where Lorenzo Alexander was recently released. I thought how our special teams sucked immediately after he left. I guess it's asking to much huh?

Pat fisher. Remember those games where he would go man on man against Harold Carmichael? He was atleast a foot shorter, but held his own. pound for pound, the toughest skin ever.
