Dodged a bullet when The Bills nabbed up Rex. (Good hire imo) The Bears are set to speak with him tommorrow in concerns of replacing Mark Tressman.

ATL has shown interest. Mike Smith did gift wrap a W this fall, so it'd only be fair.

The Niners have shown interest. And that seems like the best option for him, if he gets his choice of gigs.

And then there's here, behind Caldwell, with or maybe without his best weapon on D.

I'd be happy for him if he went to San Fran. Even Oakland would be a good spot as their defense has a lot of potential.

I dont think Chicago would be a good fit, but still hope he doesn't go there.

Until I see Quin and Bowles and McDermott hired I am assuming he is staying here because no way he gets a gig before those guys.

^^^ I agree with 2cents, in that Frisco or Oakland would be good spots.. Lot of talent on both of those Defenses for Austin to work with. ATL and CHI both need huge upgrades defensively, IMO, so that may or may not be to his liking depending on how much power he would have in player personnel choices.

I think he'll be back here, and I think Caldwell/Mayhew will give him the assistant HC name tag to wear. A lot of people are comparing him to Tomlin and only needing one year as a coordinator before moving directly to HC, but that just doesn't happen often. It was a veteran team with solid leadership in place and a coach who voluntarily retired. They also had Dick Lebeau to stabilize things. These jobs that are open are all open because they fired their coach for under performing, and even if he was ready to be a HC, he would have to put together a full staff.

I just don't think he's quite ready to take on all of that.

I think SF would be best for him. But if he got the Falcons gig, good things could happen quickly.

Lousy division. Established, accurate QB with one of the best receivers in football.

Id hate to see him in Chicago though. They aren't there right now, but it's a team and a fanbase that will always value defense over offense. And if they return to be being a franchise centered around a HOF MLB again, like they usually are, Austin could dominate.

Really, really, reallllllllllly hope he's back.

The fact that nobody but Buffalo has signed a new coach leads me to believe the teams needing a HC are interested in Asst from playoff teams like Quinn.

Austin could have been hired and got a jump start on building a staff if he was a real candidate. Not a slap at the guy but even Quinn in Seattle has had to do it multiple years before he was a real prospect.

My guess is he is Lions D-Coordinator at least one more year.

One year should not be enough to get him a HC job elsewhere, but there are some unpredictable owners out there.

Not to mention he is one of the few fresh faces is a sea of recycled failures. Bears just hired a 37 year old GM hoping to score the next big thing. Austin seems like their kind of guy and has interviewed twice.
