He was billed as a “toolsy” outfielder when he was drafted out of John Connally High School in Austin, Texas by the Phillies with the 21st pick in the 2004 draft. But those tools never came together in the minors.
Over his career, Golson played in 40 games split between the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and the New York Yankees. During that time, he compiled a slash line of .195/.214/.244. He is now playing independent baseball for the New Britain Bees where he has a slash line of .269/.374/.308. Not all prospects are meant for the majors, but at least Golson is still doing what he loves.
Other Phillies first round draft duds since 2000 include Kyle Drabek, 18th pick in the 2006 draft; Joe Savery, 18th pick in the 2007 draft; Anthony Hewitt, ss, 24th pick in the 2008 draft (it was discovered he couldn't hit nor field); Jesse Biddle, 27th pick out of Germantown High School in Philadelphia in 2010, now with PIT.
