I don't have a limit. If it's a good deal, I'll buy it. If the interior looks good, then that says a good bit about how the car was cared for.

I don't take loans out for cars. My 99 lexus had 160k when I bought it, and it's been fine. Doesn't burn a drop of oil.

bought a '97 Acura 3.0 CL in 2000 for $7500...had 90k on it...sold it for $2500 last year...with 240k.
bought a '98 Acura 3.5 RL in 2009 for $8,000...had 110k on it...sold it for $2500 last year...with 280k.
selling the CL was a mistake - thing ran like a greased lizard. selling the RL was a blessing...gorgeous car, but whoever bought it was looking at major engine/transmission/suspension/da woiks! expenses.
bought/stole a '11 Lexus ES 350 last year for $15,000...had 70k - virtually brand new...will probably be buried in it.

Living in Minnesota, I'm more worried about the presence of rust than i am about mileage.

Maintenance costs on BMWs are ridiculous. I wouldn't go there.
Me either. Great driving cars for sure, but if I couldn't afford a new one with a warranty, I'd steer clear and look elsewhere.

So true, if anything needs fixing and you can't do it yourself, expect a ridiculous bill.

I'd really think long and hard about buying any " Beamer. " Everything about that make smacks of money. From parts to labor to insurance to the extra cost for premium gas which those German vehicles thrive on. If you absolutely need a second car, get a beater for about $1500.00. As long as it runs, it will be cheap enuf to get you from point A to B. Check the craigslist in your area. Run it till it drops and you won't have any regrets.
If you want to spend more in the 5 - 6K range, consider buying a used Buick or Mercury from a senior citizen who has lost his license or can't drive anymore. Should be able to get one of those with low mileage even if it's ten years old.

With my wife's first one, I was naive and declined to extend the warranty when it expired. Big mistake. Her current one is leased. When three years are up, they can have it back.

The 2nd car need/ desire is two part.
1. I have a 42 mile drive to work, my wrangler makes me fill up 3 times a week.
2. With the baby, not much room in the jeep, with his car seat in, mom physically cannot fit in passenger seat, makes traveling with mom, baby, and dog interesting.

think i got the car situation figured out. My dad offered to sell me one of their cars for about 1/2 of the kbb value.

it's 2001 infiniti i30 (basically a nicer nissan maxima)

nice car, little more of an old person looking car than i would prefer, but for the price i dont think i can pass it up.
