NL East Rumors: Marlins

By Zach Links [July 28, 2014 at 6:42pm CDT]

The Marlins are eyeing controllable pitchers and they’re thought to be considering A’s lefty Tommy Milone, D’Backs’ lefty Wade Miley, and Padres right-hander Ian Kennedy, writes Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Of course, if their three-game set against the Nationals doesn’t go well, they could wind up going the other way and selling.

If the Marlins are offering up prospects like Justin Nicolino or Trevor Williams along with another top 15 prospect, I would jump on it.

Diamondbacks Shopping Gerardo Parra

By Jeff Todd [July 29, 2014 at 9:24pm CDT]
The Diamondbacks are shopping outfielder Gerardo Parra, an MLB executive tells ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick (via Twitter). The 27-year-old is earning $4.85MM in his penultimate season of arbitration eligibility.
Parra, who bats from the left side, was said to be an unlikely trade candidate, but it appears that Arizona’s stance has changed. Parra has struggled this year with a .256/.301/.358 line, while defensive metrics have soured on his work in the outfield. After posting 5.5 rWAR and 4.5 fWAR last year, he has been at or below replacement level in 2014.
Nevertheless, Parra could be attractive to teams given his ability to play center and track record of success. And while he will not be cheap next year, Parra should remain affordable in a market that handed eight-figure, two-year guarantees to players like Nate McLouth, Rajai Davis, and David Murphy.

I can't say we didn't see this one coming. With his lack of production coupled with Peralta continuing to playing well, it's time for Parra to move on. He will be missed. Hopefully we can get at least a top 5-10 prospect for him.

Peralta's recent play and Pollock's play at the beginning of the season have made Parra expendable. I love Parra, but a rebuilding can net a good return for him.

Diamondbacks’ Relievers Drawing Interest

By Steve Adams [July 30, 2014 at 1:06pm CDT]
The Diamondbacks’ top priority in trades is starting pitching, GM Kevin Towers tells MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert (Twitter links). Next on their list is catching and then outfield help — in that order. Towers adds that his team isn’t looking to add any bullpen arms, but they have received interest in the ones they have.

With Aaron Hill and Martin Prado both struggling, Arizona’s bullpen could hold its most attractive trade chips (although Gerardo Parra is reportedly being shopped as well). Left-hander Oliver Perez‘s affordable contract would be appealing to teams in need of a southpaw (the Braves and Pirates, for example). Right-hander Brad Ziegler is having a strong season, although somewhat curiously, the team doesn’t sound open to moving him. Even closer Addison Reed has recently been rumored to be available, which would add a more affordable late-inning option to the market (relative to Jonathan Papelbon and Joaquin Benoit, that is).

As Towers tells Gilbert, other clubs know what the Diamondbacks are looking to receive in return for their players, and for the time being, he’s waiting while the interested parties weigh the offers (Twitter link).

This is a quote from the ESPN article about the Parra trade: The Diamondbacks recently began shopping Parra, according to a baseball source, because of his declining performance and rising cost. He's making $4.85 million this season and is eligible for salary arbitration this winter.

How much money did Towers give to Kubel and Ross? I would say their declining production is far more apparent than Parra's. Ross makes twice what Parra makes. So did Kubel. And what about Trumbo's declining production? He is only batting .189 and is a terrible defensive player. This is the Diamondbacks front office now. Trade your good players for nothing in return. Keep all of the overpaid garbage players and hope for best.

It is amazing to look back at the 2011 team and the Diamondbacks today. That outfield is long gone. The starting pitching is gone besides Collmenter. The biggest difference is the minor league system. That system had Parker, Skaggs, Bauer, Matt Davidson, and Archie Bradley. Now all that is left is Bradley. Kevin Towers deserves an award for worst GM of the century.

If you are going to give away your gold glover you have to get a better return than that...

absolutely horrific trade, there is some hope with Drury though

I hate seeing all these nice trades going down by other teams that seem pretty decent for both teams, and then seeing the Diamondbacks give up their players for prospects. This organization just makes it hard to be excited about anything they do.

of course, Gambo overhyping what we got in return. Everyone saying the lefty from Brewers projects at best to a middle of rotation starter. Now all the sudden hes a #2 according to Gambo

then his precious Yankees, all the sudden Peter O'Brien is some super stud prospect

just a joke. Aside from Suns, and what the Cardinals are trying to build. I can't stand sports in this city or any of its radio personalities aside maybe from Jurecki

Here is a quick review of 2 of the players we got back in the trades.

Mitch Haniger
Rank: 11 (Mil Rank #3 2013)
Huntsville Stars (AA)
ETA: 2015
Position: OF
Age: 23, DOB: 12/23/1990
Bats: R, Throws: R
Height: 6' 2", Weight: 215
Drafted: 2012, 1st (38) - MIL
Twitter: @M_Hanny19

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Scouts thought Haniger could be a quick-moving college bat when he was coming out of Cal Poly in 2012, and so far, he's proved them right. The D-backs will hope that continues after they acquired him in the deal that sent Gerardo Parra to the Brewers at the 2014 Trade Deadline.

Haniger's quick bat produces plenty of raw power. There will always be some swing-and-miss in his game, but his approach at the plate has improved and he squares up balls well.

Haniger was a center fielder in college and has spent some time there as a professional. As an everyday player, however, he profiles best in right field, where his arm is an asset.

Peter O'Brien
Rank: 7
Trenton Thunder (AA)
ETA: 2015
Position: 1B/C
Age: 24, DOB: 07/15/1990
Bats: R, Throws: R
Height: 6' 3", Weight: 215
Drafted: 2012, 2nd (94) - NYY

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 60 | Run: 20 | Arm: 55 | Field: 40 | Overall: 50

The Rockies made O'Brien the second-highest pick ever out of Bethune-Cookman when they took him in the third round in 2011, but he opted to transfer to Miami rather than sign. He went in the second round a year later as a senior, and he has demonstrated consistent power since turning pro. O'Brien led the short-season New York-Penn League with 10 homers in his pro debut in '12, topped the Yankees' system with 22 in his first full season in '13 and was third in the Minors with 33 at the time of the 2014 Trade Deadline deal that sent him to Arizona for Martin Prado.

O'Brien's raw pop ranks among the best in the Minors, and he can crush the ball out of any part of any ballpark with his combination of bat speed and strength. He hit the longest measured homer during the 2013 Arizona Fall League season, a 455-foot blast. O'Brien does swing and miss a lot, and he doesn't control the strike zone well, so there's some concern as to how much he'll be able to hit for average and tap into his power against more advanced pitchers.

There are defensive concerns with O'Brien, as well. He has raw arm strength, though he needs to quicken his transfer and release, and scouts question whether he can refine his receiving and stay behind the plate. O'Brien has seen time at third base and in the outfield, but his lack of speed and quickness may leave first base as his only realistic fallback.

Other Lists: Top 10 1st Base Prospects (#8)

My thoughts:
So we got two top 5 prospects from other teams, a young SP arm & PTBNL from the Yankees. It's not an overall great haul, but it is a good haul that could be turn out better with the PTBNL.

This clears up about 20 mil in salary for next season & leaves us at about $69 mil plus arbitration (Trumbo/Miley/others) for next season.

This is the reason why the dbacks have yet to put a foothold in Arizona sports. These deals are mediocre. It is hilarious when you can barely get a top 10 prospect for a starting ML player.

These deals really make me question who is pulling the strings. This smells like a KT affair!

I wouldn't call these guys barely top 10. Both of the major prospects coming back would be top 5 in at least half of the farm systems out there. But they are not "elite" talent. You usually don't get back "elite" talent for guys like Prado & Parra.

Both Parra & Prado have weaknesses & are at their best when they are part of a winning team. But on a losing rebuilding team, their talents aren't worth as much & their weaknesses stand out more.

Can the tigers really afford to keep David price after that trade? I think overall is was a decent trade for all parties but it is pricey for a rental. I do believe that the tigers and A's are the front runners for the World Series. Pitching never fails in the postseason.
