Number 1 and 2 must be The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Without those two bands battling it out in the early to mid 60's you wouldn't have any of the newer stuff. In the 60's it wasn't about the Stones, or the Who, it was the best of the UK vs the best of USA. And outside of their original record or 2 the music wasn't about cars and surfing. There is a reason Sgt Peppers and Per Sounds are the two best records of all time. Numbers 3 4 and 5 would have to be Ozzy/Sabbath, Metallica, and Nirvana. Every one of those 5 decided what was coming next.

There's probably 20 bands that have an argument to be #5.

The best thing in the early to mid 60's in America wasn't the amazingly overrated Beach Boys it was The Temptations. IMO anywho...

The Beach Boys are probably overrated as a whole, but Brian Wilson is probably underrated...

The Beach Boys weren't "overrated"..but they were overexposed & overplayed. Most of their tunes will still be revered and enjoyed decades from now...and rightly so imho.
I agree about The Temptations/mid 60's...in fact, I would argue the same for most, if not all of the Motown groups. That era was just amazing.

Anyone who doesn't have the clash on their list isn't taking this serious enough.

The Clash would absolutely make my list but I just see them more as a punk band than a rock band.

They were so much more than just a "punk band"..they continued to evolve. They were the conscience, mouthpiece and the vanguards of that era/generation in society...a la: the way Bob Dylan was to a previous generation, in that he was much much more than a just folk singing poet. Bands & artists like them only come along once in a great while. Thank goodness for their influence and body of work.

Oh I agree, I was about 11 - 12 years old when the clash came out and they were without question one of my favorites.

Motown was great and a big reason why the 60's to mid 70's were the best time for music.

I don't think a lot of the Beach Boys' music holds up as well today as the Beatles, Stones, Who, and Led Z.

On a related note, when it comes down to 70's rock bands, I think Aerosmith's music holds up the best in 2016.

Joshua Tree was pretty good back when it came out. Other than that I agree.

Beach Boys & Grateful Dead most overrated bands of all time IMO...

I used to like U2. I think they had a good ten-year run where they were making a lot of interesting music. That started with their War album (still one of my favorites 33 years later) and ended with their Zooropa album. I haven't really been able to get into anything they've released in the last 20 years.

Shit, I would put Skynyrd and Allman Bros in there somewhere too. SRV is my favorite guitarist, but I'm not sure Double Trouble ranks in my top 10 as a "band".

Bruce's E Street Band has always been great. (RIP Big Man)
