Sharon Jones, a powerhouse soul singer with a gritty voice, fast feet and indomitable energy, died Friday of pancreatic cancer. She was 60.

Her death was confirmed by Judy Miller Silverman, her publicist. She said Ms. Jones died at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, N.Y., and was surrounded by members of her band, the Dap-Kings, and other loved ones when she died.

Even though it was mentioned numerous times already, I'm just going to put Greg Lake in here for reference.

Legendary drummer Alphonse Mouzon dies at age 68

Mouzon was born on November 21, 1948 in Charleston, South Carolina, and received his first musical training at Bonds-Wilson High School. He then moved to New York City upon graduation, and studied drama and music at the City College of New York as well as medicine at Manhattan Medical School. Mouzon continued receiving drum lessons from Bobby Thomas, the drummer for jazz pianist Billy Taylor, and played percussion in the Broadway show "Promises, Promises." He then worked with pianist McCoy Tyner, and spent a year as a member of the jazz fusion band, Weather Report. After that Mouzon signed as a solo artist to the Blue Note label in 1972.

We are sadden by the news that Tommy Allsup passed away today at the age of 85. The staff at the Buddy Holly Center extends its condolences to Tommy's family during this difficult time. Rave on, Tommy!

Randy Steele fondly remembers the last time he saw Tommy Allsup, the guitarist who toured with Lubbock musician Buddy Holly in 1959.

Steele arranged for Allsup to come to Lubbock last year, when he was interviewed in October for a documentary ahead of the opening of the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences.

It’s possible that was the last on-camera interview for Allsup — the guitarist known for riffs in the Crickets’ single “It’s So Easy.”

Steele, who spoke with the guitarist’s wife, confirmed Allsup died Wednesday. He was 85.

“Tommy’s body may have been 85, but his hands were as young as ever, and so was his mind,” said Steele, adding he’s a longtime friend of the Holly family and an avid fan and researcher of Holly and the Crickets. “He played unbelievable. It was almost effortless, or seamless.”

Butch Trucks, a founding member of and drummer for the Allman Brothers Band, has died. He was 69 years old.

Relix reports Trucks’ death, citing both a Facebook post from his cousin, Lee Trucks, and a post from the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival, at which Trucks was scheduled to perform.

“Great drummer. Good person,” Lee Trucks writes in his post. No further information nor a cause of death has been revealed, but The Boot will update this story as more details become available.

Butch Trucks was born Claude Hudson Trucks in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 11, 1947. In 1969, he helped form the Allman Brothers Band with Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley and Jai Johanny Johanson. Trucks was one of the most consistent forces within the Allman Brothers Band until their breakup in 2014; in recent years, he performed as part of Les Brers — a “superjam” group that included fellow former ABB members — and with Butch Trucks & the Freight Train Band.

Trucks’ musical family members include son Vaylor Trucks (the Yeti Trio); nephew Derek Trucks of the Tedeschi Trucks Band and nephew Duane Trucks, who performs with Widespread Panic and Hard Working Americans.

Joni Sledge of the group Sister Sledge, best known for the iconic disco 1979 anthem We Are Family, has died at 60.

The group's publicist, Biff Warren, said Sledge was found at home in Arizona and they have yet to determine a cause of death. She had not been ill, he said.

"We miss her and hurt for her presence, her radiance, and the sincerity with which she loved & embraced life," the group said in a statement.
