I know there was some “Heaney is mediocre” talk, but it’s so damn refreshing to know that an in demand pitcher with 10 different offers on the table chose the RANGERS and we didn’t even offer the most money.

from 2009-2012 when we had the best lineup in baseball, pitchers still avoided us like the plague. We had to trade for cliff lee. We had to draft or develop everyone else.

things are changing folks.

I would say the risk is fairly minimal due to the 2 years. Bennie was right that 4 years would have been too big of a commitment and potentially blocked better arms. But there are ways out of a 2-year deal, and if you’re going to take a free agency flier, then one on someone with a higher upside is one you want to take.

I’m just beyond sick of watching the Rangers trot out mediocre starter after starter with minimal talent over the last 5 years (with only a few notable exceptions).

the Folty / allard bullshit was unwatchable.

From Levi Weaver:

Speaking of home runs, that’s been one of Heaney’s issues. His 1.73 home runs per nine innings last season was pretty much in line with his career mark of 1.6. That’s not a huge red flag, but it isn’t particularly great. In fact, among pitchers with at least 70 innings thrown last season, Heaney gave up the eighth-worst HR/9 mark. For comparison, here are the 2022 HR/9 numbers for the other four projected members of the rotation:

Jacob deGrom: 1.3
Jon Gray: 1.2
Jake Odorizzi: 1.2
Martín Pérez: 0.5

That's a very good point.
CY is helping turn Texas into a desirable place for players to come.
He's changed the priorities for this club, too. Pitching used to be secondary to hitting, and now pitching is taken much more seriously. Gray last off-season was a priority signing, the trade for Odorizzi, DeGrom is the biggest pitching signing in franchise history, by far. And (though I'm fairly skeptical of his injury history) the Heaney signing.

Yes but the Rangers agreed to a one year opt out by him. If he pitches a lot better than last year he will hit the FA market again next December.
I don’t know if the other teams offered that option to him.

heaneys outcome is violatle imo, he has swing and miss stuff so a lot of upside there. Saw a tweet that said he and degrom were top 5 in whiff rate thats nice.
