Preview (from AP)
Swing and a miss.
That should be the consistent theme Tuesday night if starting pitchers Tim Lincecum and Ryan Dempster stay true to form. The starting duo on the hill rank No. 2 and No. 8, respectively, in whiffs in the National League this season.
Lincecum is averaging 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, while Dempster has punched out 8.6 batters per nine innings, the second-highest total of his career.
Lincecum has posted a 3.15 ERA this season with a 1.279 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings pitched) and Dempster has racked up a 3.76 ERA with a 1.314 WHIP. In other words, a low-scoring affair would appear to be on the horizon.
Lincecum was tagged for two home runs in his last start, a first in over two years. The Cubs must hope Lincecum is off his game again if they are to break out of their double-digit game slump.
Chicago enters Tuesday having dropped 11 of its last 12 contests.
"We need to turn it around, no question," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "It's no fun, no fun to go out and get beat. We're playing good teams. We've got San Francisco, we've got St. Louis, we've got San Diego and we've got Atlanta. We better be up to the challenge and play better."
Cubs: Soto to DL, Lee on bereavement
Following Monday's game, the Cubs placed Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a ligament sprain in his right shoulder. Derrek Lee, who missed Monday's series opener to be with his ill grandfather in Sacramento, was put on bereavement leave after the game.
Giants: Sandoval enjoys comforts of home
Pablo Sandoval has hit safely in his last 13 home games and in 20 of his last 21. His .323 home average ranks No. 9 in the National League.
Worth noting
The Cubs have won the past three season series with the Giants and have gone 13-7 in that span. Monday was the first time the teams had faced off this season.
