A big salary, an injury and some high-priced additions on defense spelled the end for Mike Daniels with the Green Bay Packers.

The team will release Daniels, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday, one day before the Packers' first training camp practice.

While the former Pro Bowl defensive tackle's release might have come as a surprise, Daniels was due to make $8.5 million this season -- $7.6 million base salary, $500,000 roster bonus and $400,000 workout bonus -- in the final year of a four-year, $41 million contract extension signed on Dec. 13, 2015, when he looked like a future star.

This move caught me off guard. I get the business side of it but I have a hard time wrapping my head around not seeing Big Mike on the DL. However the saved 8+ million is nice.

It will be interesting to see where he lands and how much he'll get paid.

Not sure if you were being literal in your description or not but for a D-lineman he is on the small side. He made up for it in his tenacity and lead by example attitude. Heard he is already headed to Cleveland for a visit.

Too bad the Packers couldn't trade him for a draft pick.

It was reported that seven teams are interested in signing him.

It’s just a nickname he picked up. He played much bigger than his stature. He brought the grit that we never had enough of but he did his part.

DAMNIT. Daniels is signing in Detroit. That front four is nasty and you know he wants to hit Rodgers.

A one year deal for $9.1 million......I always liked the guy but have to think that Detroit overpaid.
