Whatever the cause of death ends up being, it will be sad. This organization has had a number of deaths in recent times. Thinking of baseball in general, there was some embarrassment over the deaths of Tim Crews and Steve Olin during their boating/drinking accident and a couple of years ago with Jose Fernandez's own coke-fueled boat crash.

Pushing him past his limits for immediate profit doesn't help his long-term prospects, where the real money is made.

Even if he had survived, those injuries and/or addiction issues could have taken his toll on the back end of his career and earning potential. Even if he tailed off as a starter, he could be getting 5-7 million, even as a middle relief guy. Especially as a lefty.
