Opening Day payrolls
(Major League contracts plus signing bonuses):
2014: $156,350,125
2013: $154,555,500
2012: $175,249,119
A Look Back… Last 5 Years Draft Picks
Year Name/Position School/Hometown Pick
2014 Michael Chavis/3B Sprayberry HS, Marietta, Ga. 26
2013 Trey Ball/LHP New Castle (Ind.) High School 7
2012 Brian Johnson/LHP Florida 31
2012 Deven Marrero/SS Arizona State 24
2011 Blake Swihart/C Cleveland High School 26
2015 Red Sox Top Prospects
Rank/Overall Name Position
1/20 Henry Owens LHP
Henry Owens Rookie Card: 2013 Bowman
Top Position Prospect : LHP
Owens is a crafty lefty who throws his fastball in the low 90s normally sitting in the 88-92 range and has a plus changeup. Consistency on his other breaking pitches is something that he continues to work on. He is #1 on our list because of his overall stuff and feel for pitching. He projects as a mid-to-back-end rotation starter.
2/24 Blake Swihart C
Blake Swihart Rookie Card: 2011 Bowman
Top Position Prospect : C
Swihart is a rare commodity of a great defender and a great hitting catcher. There are very few, if any that fall into the same category as Swihart. To support his case, he nailed 47% of runners attempting to steal last season. At the plate, he shows great pitch recognition and has pop from both sides of the dish. His aggressiveness at the plate can get him into trouble especially against polished pitchers but ultimately he will hit for a high average with a little power.
3/55 Garin Cecchini 3B
Garin Cecchini Rookie Card: 2011 Bowman
Top Position Prospect : 3B
Cecchini made his MLB debut last year after a solid season in Triple-A. He has hit well over his pro career and drew rave reviews for his ability to get on-base. His bat will carry him to the bigs this year and his work ethic is very impressive.
