9 stories that deserve more attention

9. The Rangers’ rotation is being led by their top pitching prospect ... from 2012.

At 31 years old, Martín Pérez is suddenly better than ever. He’s been around the block a time or two since debuting with the Rangers in 2012. He left Texas for the Twins in free agency in 2019 and pitched for the Red Sox in 2020 and 2021, only to end up back with the Rangers this year on a one-year, $4 million deal. Pérez’s career has not been bereft of great games or great stretches, but on measure from 2012-21, he had an ERA+ of 96, or 4% worse than league average.

Suddenly, this season, his 1.42 ERA and 274 ERA+ going into Sunday’s start is the best in the Majors. He’s throwing his sinker more frequently and with better location, and his changeup has been almost untouchable. We had Pérez on our list of potential starter trade chips, but the Rangers, after a brutal start, have played well enough of late to invite the possibility of a playoff run, and Pérez is a big reason why.

To me this is good time of if you want to see them all. They are going to keep Leody. Not sure about Walker or for that matter Bubba

Does this move tell us as much about Leody Taveras and Bubba Thompson as it does about Steele Walker?

I did mention what you stated today about a week or so ago in that it seems for many when they get a really good deal in terms of salary and years they struggle from putting such high expectations on themselves. I just hope it does not go beyond this year when we are putting together the team we are wanting to see compete for the top spot.
I figured someone had brought this up; since I'm such a part-timer these days. ha.........Most of the time, guys finally get off their own back and let the game play out for them, and all is good. Let's sincerely hope this is true for Mr Marcus too. Honestly, there's really no reason to think otherwise is there?

I think it tells us that this FO isn't prone to sitting on their hands anymore.
Well, I guess it can tell us a lot of things, but my question was more specifically about the three guys I mentioned.

As far as the FO sitting on their hands, I think it has been a long while since that could be said.

Does this move tell us as much about Leody Taveras and Bubba Thompson as it does about Steele Walker?

Steele walker has a better approach at the plate and hasn’t had a chance yet.
Taveras has had a few chances and maybe out of minor league options? Once he comes up again, he’s up.
Thompson has great speed and good bat to ball skills but needs to draw a few more walks so his speed can play at the top of the order.
