Yep, just looked at some numbers, Pirates last year .65 E/G, this year .78E/G. Also DP/G went from 2.33 last year to 2.06 this year. Significant numbers.

The two reasons our pitchers have struggled this year, I think, are home runs and poorer defense. The home runs might have something to do with all those games in hitters parks early, but the defense is a little more foreboding, I think.

I also think something like a third of Morton's runs are unearned, and that there have been 14 or 15 errors in his 11 starts so far.

Yeah, I don't know what to make of the defense. And yeah, 23 ER, and 9 Unearned for Morton.

I know Pedro is having an obviously tough year as far as errors go. Walker is having a terrible year as far as outs go. I don't know what his deal is, but he's only converted 92 of 153 (68.2%) plays in his zone this year, when his career number is 78.0% converted of balls in zone. And it's not like this is the first year they have started shifting. He has the worst by numbers of any qualified second basemen, when in previous years he was fairly average.

If Walker converted 78% of those 135 plays instead of 68% that 15 extra outs. And the inside edge metrics have fallen off a cliff, he is essentially worse at every type of ball except routine plays that should be gotten to over 90% of the time.

For as poor as our defense has been, the Mets' defense has been exceptional this series.

Agreed, they have been solid. And actually the Pirates have made some plays too, but the errors are just too much.
