ReFo: Bengals @ Chargers, Week 13

Sam Monson | December 2, 2013

It is games like this the Bengals need to win to be for real by the end of the season. Winning at San Diego in their current guise is no mean feat, but it’s a game a contender needs to be able to come away with. That’s exactly what Cincinnati did, executing well enough to stomp the life out of the game when it looked as if the Chargers might find a way back into it.

It wasn’t without hiccups along the way, with turnovers giving San Diego more chances than they perhaps deserved, and injuries that forced re-shuffles on the O-line making for some interesting sub plots to the game.

In the end the Bengals got the ball back and just ran the same play over and over to chew the remainder of the clock as the Chargers just couldn’t stop it.

Cincinnati: Three Performances of Note

Changing of the Guard

When LG Clint Boling went down after five snaps the Bengals were forced into a re-shuffle on the line, and they elected to kick Andrew Whitworth in to LG from LT. Whitworth actually started his Bengals career at that very spot, so it shouldn’t be hugely surprising that he was perfectly adept at locking the spot down in a time of need. In fact, he did better than that, putting in a +4.5 graded performance thanks to some dominant run blocking. It wasn’t perfect, and he surrendered a couple of hurries as well as missing a couple of blocks when asked to pull around on power plays, but overall this was an excellent display from Whitworth asked to do a job on short notice. His LT spot was taken by Anthony Collins who had been given the start at RT over Andre Smith in this game. Smith came back into his RT spot and had arguably his best game of the season (the other contender being Wk 5 against the Patriots) with a +4.5 grade. Collins held up perfectly in pass protection but wasn’t the force in the run game of the two bigger men.

Dalton Can’t Afford These Mistakes

Andy Dalton doesn’t have anything going for him from a physical standpoint at the NFL level. He doesn’t have elite arm talent, speed, size or crazy athleticism. He needs to be good at the little things that players who don’t have any of the above need to be good at in order to be successful. Joe Montana didn’t have any of that either, but he had everything else nailed. Dalton doesn’t, not even close. He continues to air-mail passes three yards over his receiver’s heads on routine throws that he has to make, and his interception may as well have been a punt the way he just heaved it up for grabs to Eric Weddle playing FS deep down field. He may have completed 60.9% of his passes in this game, but the way it panned out that number should have been more like 70, and on a relatively comfortable outing Dalton should have been looking to have posted an efficient 300 yards with very few mistakes. Instead he was a large reason behind the game being as close as it was.

Concerning Breakdowns

The Bengals didn’t give up a whole lot on defense, but they did manage to blow a couple of plays wide open, including one for a San Diego touchdown up the seam. The blame for that play is definitely shared amongst a few defenders, though DC Mike Zimmer was certainly directing his wrath on the sideline primarily at LB Rey Maualuga for not getting to his mark sooner. Safety Reggie Nelson also took an ugly mis-step and failed to stay over the top of both receivers on his side of the field, taking himself essentially completely out of the play by guessing on the pass. Adam Jones was also the victim on a few plays, though more often than not by failing to limit the damage and missing a tackle after he had already allowed a catch.

San Diego: Three Performances of Note

Fluker at LT

On the face of it, things don’t look good for Fluker. A -4.0 grade and surrendering seven pressures is a fairly ugly looking product of his day, but it had a death by a thousand paper cuts vibe about it. Fluker was rarely badly beaten, but rather kept surrendering pressure just at the end of plays and falling just short of doing enough to keep the pocket completely clean. For a guy going up against an impressive pass-rusher in the form of Michael Johnson that in itself is not a terrible achievement, especially for a guy playing essentially out of position on the left side. Fluker had a few nice plays, particularly in the passing game, and did keep Philip Rivers clean in terms of sacks and knockdowns despite the seven hurries. The grade and stats aren’t pretty, but all things considered this could have been a lot worse for the big tackle.

Run Over

The Chargers just couldn’t stop the Bengals running all game long. Nobody in the front seven stood up to be counted consistently and though players took turns in making plays here and there, the Bengals just regrouped, set up again and ploughed the road once more. They averaged 4.3 yards per carry, which isn’t particularly special, but they ran the ball 38 times, 35 by design, and their running backs kept dragging defenders for extra yardage and key first downs to extend the drive by moving the chains. It spoke volumes that when they needed to run the clock down in the dying minutes they just reloaded the same play half a dozen times and gained chunks of yardage on each occasion. LB Donald Butler struggled particularly badly with a -5.3 grade, but he was not alone. Manti Te’o was also routinely blasted out of the hole at the second level and rarely was the defensive line able to hold its ground.

Finally an Interception

At times it does look as if Eric Weddle is a school teacher, trying to keep control of a group of unruly kids that don’t really know what they’re doing. His play at times feels very much as if he is trying to do too much to patch up the mistakes of others, but when he just plays his own game he still plays like one of the league’s best safeties. This game saw him rewarded with an interception on a deep pass down the middle. It was one of the easier picks he will get in the NFL, for while he had to travel a reasonable distance to get there, the ball was hung up for an age by Dalton and gave him plenty of time to cover the ground. Weddle also generated pressure the one time the Chargers sent him on the blitz.

Game Notes

- Dalton’s passer rating without pressure was 119.7, but when he felt heat it was just 22.2

- Of BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ 20 carries, 7 went for either a first down or a touchdown.

- Philip Rivers went deep (20+ in the air) just once all game, throwing incomplete.

PFF Game Ball

It’s tough to look beyond Andrew Whitworth for swapping positions and dominating, but he’s going to have to split the award this week with Andre Smith, who came off the bench and had a fine game.

Once again a solid team victory overcoming Bad Andy, who was the only offensive player to grade below -1 (-3.1 to be exact).

No surprises, really.

Just curious why Andre was benched, but no one has said anything about it.

If the Bengals can continue to run the ball, it will help take pressure off Dalton.

You could tell early on that, even with little pressure, Dalton was rushing. The protection hasn't been great the past few games, and that was clearly in his head. He settled down nicely in the 2nd half, but the killer is the INT was just a poor decision. There was no way that ball should have been thrown. None. Double covered, under/over. Someone else has to be open, or throw it away.

That play alone should have been a -1.5, it was so bad a decision and throw. Not sure why Andre was benched either, but it's moot now with the Boling injury. Apparently whatever the reason, it got his attention, since he came off the bench to have his best game of the season.

Also notable the run blocking teamwise was +9.3, led by Whit's +4.3 and Andre's +3.1.....the tight ends both had positive run blocking grades too. Gresham has been much better the last two games in this area. Hopefully that's a new trend and not just an exceptional day.

Dalton is now on a horrible four game run (-1.4/-5.6/-2.3/-3.1) following his hot two game stretch of +2.9/+5.7.......his play at Miami and Baltimore were huge factors in the teams last two losses.....maybe the running game will be the team's savior down the stretch, or maybe somehow Good Andy can return for awhile......

we won't run on good defenses.....not that same play over and over

most teams shut down our run.

probably our downfall in the playoffs, we already can't pass the ball, so if we can't run either, then we're about done.

Joe posted this on the enquirer:

Andy Dalton finished as the only player in the red, with a -3.1 overall grade. Kyle Cook was the only negatively graded lineman at an average -0.1.

* Both starting tight ends had green run blocking grades. If it stands up to All-22 review this time (it didn’t last time), it would be the first time both graded better than +1.0 in run blocking this year.

* Dalton was only pressured six times, but threw his interception on one of those six plays and only completed one of six attempts when he was pressured – Andrew Hawkins’ 50 yard catch. A majority of his overall grade was determined by those six snaps, where he was graded -2.3.

* Dalton threw it short a lot – 15 of his 23 attempts were either behind or within 9 yards of the line of scrimmage. Deeper than 10 yards downfield he was 3/7 for 99 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

* The Bengals ran it well on the right side, where Andrew Whitworth was a pulling lead blocker for much of the day en route to his +4.2 run blocking grade. On runs behind right guard, right tackle, or to the right edge, running backs had 107 yards on 18 attempts.

* Green-Ellis picked up almost half of his 92 yards after contact (45 YAC), averaging 2.25 yards after contact on the day. He only forced one missed tackle, but moved the pile well after contact.

* A.J. Green was the only Bengals receiver targeted more than three times. He caught five of those passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Andy Dalton finished with a 110.0 pass rating throwing to Green.

DEFENSE

* Only on the field for two snaps, Dre Kirkpatrick came away with the highest coverage grade on the day after intercepting a pass that Antonio Gates had in his hands.

* In his return from injury, Rey Maualuga played 39 of the team’s 69 defensive snaps. He was a thumper in run defense, but a liability in pass defense and missed two tackles.

* Michael Johnson was the Bengals’ top pass rusher, logging 6 hurries. He also showed well with two stops and a positive day in the run game.

* Philip Rivers took one deep shot that fell incomplete. Rivers was very good when he was blitzed, completing 8 of his 10 attempts for 112 yards when the Bengals brought extra pressure.

So, the numbers say that we're pretty good outside of Dalton and Cook? I never would have figured it!

At the beginning of the season I thought it was clear that this would be Michael Johnson's last year with the team and I was actually okay with it. When you give big contracts to two guys on the line (Atkins and Dunlap) and invest high draft picks in prior drafts (Still, Thompson, Hunt), it becomes hard to justify another top 10 contract at the position. Now I find myself hoping we pony up and keep him..... Over the past few seasons, its clear that what separates our team from the large chunk of .500 and sub-500 teams is our D-line play. I'm about ready to give up on Still and who knows whether Hunt will be ready to contribute next year.

When is Halls contract up?

You also have to figure the Bengals will need more drafting at CB, as well. It looks like Safety is finally figured out with Iloka. I might be in the minority, but I would keep Crocker around as the 3rd/4th DB/safety. Dude just plays well on this defense.

Agreed about Johnson, but you have to figure that guys like Burfict and Nelson are going to get some raises soon. With Atkins and Hall already signed (not sure of Halls contract status, though) to good sized deals...I don't know that it can be done. Also, I think they signed Geathers to a 3 year deal in the off-season.

Also have to factor in AJ is going to get a HUGE raise, and like it or not, Dalton is going to get an extention as well.

Leon Hall

2014 - $6.8 million
2015 - $7.7 million
2016 - Free Agent

Robert Geathers

2014 - $2.5 million
2015 - $2.85 million
2016 - Free Agent

Geathers made $1.8 million this year in base salary, $1.25 million in roster bonus. He was eligible for $450,000 in incentives.

we can convert anyone to safety, don't worry.

Yes, but getting solid play out of that position is another thing.

Iloka is finally giving the back end of the DB's solid play.

Nelson has been very good for us.

Williams and Crocker have added good depth. For once, the Bengals don't have to go into the draft looking for safety help, though I think Crocker will...once again...be gone after this year. He'll be re-signed 3 games into the 2014 season...LOL

The only way to free up "extra" money for Johnson would be, probably, to cut Hall with an injury settlement, and then cut Geathers as well.

But, that would also mean that the Bengals need F/A help at corner. Newman has played well, but he's old. Kirkpatrick is still an unknown, and Ghee can't stay healthy. Adam Jones had done alright, but we don't have a true #1 CB out there, and in this day of 3-4 wide, the every team needs several good CB's.

Nelson still has two years on a four year deal. He'll be 32 when he finishes his next deal and will probably be affordable.

Geathers is signed, but he can be cut (if health doesn't return) without too much money against cap.

Burfict is still very cheap for the next two seasons. Even at the end of his third season, he'll only be eligible for restricted free agency. We offer a first round tender and we get the right of first refusal for any deal. In reality, I expect that we offer him a decent contract a year or so before he ever comes up for unrestricted FA.
