Tim Kurkjian just said on Baseball Tonight that the Sox have just asked the White Sox for Jake's medical records so it appears that a deal is close. Stating that Jose is included in the package because they feel he's easier to trade with Bogarts in AAA which will allow the White Sox to move Alexi Ramirez for bullpen help. Not happy at all. Didn't want to see Peavy especially with us giving up on Jose plus with all the money he's owed for next year at 14.5 million. No word on it being official or what's really included but stay tuned to ESPN for updates.:wtf2:

it's official, agree, not thrilled due to injury prone and high salary for Peavy...not sure who else is there though, Garza would have been a fit I think, do not want Lee, Norris is more of a level 2 guy to me, would be better in a smaller market, think that Buchholz needs to get his head out of his hind end and back on the mound

If Iglesias actually is gone I am not going to be happy.

We have enough depth in IF to survive his departure, but I'd rather have kept him.

Yeah Iglesias is going to Detroit which will help their defense and I guess it's two lower level prospects (no names given) from us but still no idea on how the salary is being taken care of. So we get a starter but no bullpen help. I hope they can swing something for a late inning guy like Joe Nathan. I like Koji but I think he would be better suited as a set up guy and not a closer plus how could it hurt us by getting a solid guy on the back end.

iggys will replace peralta?? (sp) one of the few neames in that steriod thing.. i too woul dhave rather have kept him but i think we have the depth to cover it. Peavy .. im not sold on.. injured in what 2010 and hasnt been really the same since.. just had soem back or rib injury recently era seems a little high .. maybe he will fit in and get those numbers down.. we needed an arm .. we got one.. i think contract is much more managable then lee would have been. maybe it will work out..

As part of the deal the Sox get Brayan Villareal from the Tigers...who does not even make me lift an eyebrow, here is his 2013 line:

0-2, 20.77 ERA in 7 games pitching in 4.1 innings and has given up 8 hits that have plated 10 runs...ugh, sounds like a project to be sent down to learn how to pitch at this point

With Bogaerts in the system Iglesias was expendable. We weren't going to hold on to both of them so one was trade bait. I think the Sox like Bobaerts better, if this is the case the trade was a no brainer for the Sox. Boston is a WS favorite and this move helps now. Tampa looks like their going to be there til the end and help was needed. I like the move.

I haven't actually seen Bogaerts play yet, and have seen Iglesias.

In sum, I'm less sure than you appear to be about their relative merits, and
will continue to prefer the one who has played in MLB to the one who hasn't yet.

au contraire my friend, if I recall Mark Belanger played in the 70's and finished up in the early 80's...predecessor to some kid named Ripken as I remember...I don't consider myself old, but my first real baseball memory was Fisk's home run in 75, then my little league team was the Red Sox..for an Iowa boy who grew up in Cubs country that was all it took to hook me for life...little did I know about what was to come til 86 and then finally in 2004 and 07.

with numbers like these the Tigers must be jumping for joy to be rid of him!

Belanger was past his prime by then, but in that prime he teamed with Brooks Robinson
to make the best left side of an infield I've seen in 40+ years or watching baseball.

Hey, I grew up in Cardinal country, but had a New England native father. And a grandmother who grew up in Minnesota. Split loyalties I am very familiar with, though the Bosox will always be #1 with me.

Let's hope ex-pitching coach Farrell can straighten him out. Don't believe we have any other choice.

Surprised a few are down on this trade... Really surpeised some are complaining about the contract price... how is $14.5m bad for a pretty good 32 yr old starter? Especially with the Sox available payroll?

He's a more reliable option than the AAA kids they've been parading out there. And, with their new found depth, they can even employ a 6 man rotation to give the other starters extra rest down the stretch...

They sold on Iglesias at his highest, good move by the Sox.

I totally agree. I don't know what all of the fuss is about Iglesias. Yes, he has a great glove, but aside from his early season unconscious hitting, he hasn't shown the ability to hit at any level beforehand. He was already regressing to the norm before he was traded.

He will carve out a nice, long career at SS as long as he can hit .240 because of his glove, but the guy was more than expendable.

When Bogaerts gets the call for good, he could be our regular shortstop for a few years before changing positions. At that point, Devon Marrero should/could be ready for the majors. Marrero's pedigree is also great defense (though maybe not as good as Iglesias), but he also has shown hitting ability in college.

I am not a big Peavy fan, but I don't understand how a Sox fan cannot like this deal. Peavy is signed for next season at $14.5mm. That may be a bit high for what he has done this season, but not for what he did last season. Even if his 2015 option were to kick in (400 IP between 2013 and 2014 and 190 IP in 2014 -which is not likely), it is still not a bad contract. It falls right in line with the contracts given to Victorino and Dempster. It is the type of contract that helps the team now without strapping it in terms of dollars or years until the prospects make the team for good.

Peavy has been injury prone, but this is a trade for depth. We are not asking him to be our ace, but be one of a group of very solid pitchers. The guy throws strikes, which is incredibly important, and keeps him team in the game. Hopefully, pitching in the less HR-prone Fenway will cut down on some of his HR's allowed. He also has that "bulldog" reputation of wanting the ball, like Lackey has. You have to like a guy that has that competitive fire.

Having him around for next season will give the Sox tremendous pitching depth, and they don't have to rush Barnes, Webster, or Ranaudo to the majors if injuries strike early. We already saw what Workman can do in his short time in the majors.

The problem (Ha!) is what do the Sox do if/when Bucky gets healthy? I can see them use a 6 man rotation for a couple of turns to ease Bucky back in and rest the other guys, but someone will have to be demoted at some point. Doubront's pitched well, but he is in line for another career high in innings, and a move to the bullpen can limit them.

We also did not trade ANY of our top prospects. In fact, only Mortas was rated as high as #36 by SoxProspects.com. Take a look at what Texas gave up for a Garza rental and what Baltimore gave up for Bud Norris.

Excellent job by Ben Cherington!!

Tell that to people who can remember watching Mark Belanger play for Earl Weaver's Orioles.

As a kid, I played shortstop. As a kid growing up in Queens, my idol was Buddy Harrelson. My next favorite SS was Mark Belanger.

The difference is that in those days there was much less emphasis on the bat if you played short. It was a "have glove, will travel" era in baseball. Nowadays, there is much more emphasis on offense. I still think there is room for defensive specialists, but it almost has to be on a team that already has a great offense.

I wish Iggy well. His range will definitely be needed playing next to Miggy in Detroit.
