What about starting the Suspension 3,4 days later .

Hamels pitches Sunday vs the Nats and gets suspended , his next start would be Friday or Sat , so start the suspension on Thursday for 5 games .

This way the Phillies are forced to replace Hamels for one start and he is unable to pitch for 8 , 9 days leaving them short one pitcher for 8,9 games , the way it is now Hamels getting suspended is nothing more than giving him an extra day of rest .

No need to apologize. There was definitely an element of syntactic ambiguity in my first reply.

Syntactic Ambiguity sounds like a cool name for a band.

I think it's a money issue. Hamels will lose 5 days of pay the same as a position player would with the same suspension I believe. Once you try to match actual games played between everyday players and starting pitchers the loss of money becomes uneven. And then I think it would be a messy situation with the union.

Fine. Suspend him for the 25 games, but only fine him 5 days' pay. Let him collect the other 20 days worth of pay. He is only suspended on days that his name comes up in the rotation.

I know that the MLBPA will never allow it. But it should be done.

But again, a pitcher is a much bigger deal than a position player on a given day. So missing 5 starts for a pitcher is like a position player missing 10-15 games.

Actually, it's like a position player missing a month. 5 starts is roughly 16% of the season.

Good point. So 5 starts would indeed be way too much for Hamels.
