is hurdle putting jones in the 2 hole to:
get more speed at the top of the lineup,
break up the lefties of alvarez and jones.
i think pedro will see better pitches with jones behind him.
how long will this experiment last.

just read the recap of the game.
hurdle says he wants to get someone with a high ops against righties in fromt of cutch to be on base.
walkers obp = 352, jones = 332 last year against righties.
not sure their career stats, but got to think walker is ahead as that is his strong side.

I believe Clint was referring to Jones OPS not OBP, in which Jones is .849 and Walker .793 in their career.

Although Walker is more OBP driven, so it makes more sense to hit him two in any sense.

makes sense if that was his logic but Sanchez does nothing for Alvarez and Walker is mired between Sanchez and the 7,8,9 hitters it is such a shame. But just imagine if they move Jones to 5, Walker to 2 and Sanchez to 6. The 6,7,8 and 9 of Sanchez/Snider/Tabata, C, Barmes and Pitcher. What a sad time it will this year.

No matter how I look at this and actually think of the changes it just gets worse!

4-4-2013 lineup, Martin in the 2 hole.

Marte, S, LF
Martin, C
McCutchen, A,
Sanchez, G, 1B
Alvarez, 3B
Walker, 2B
Tabata, RF
Barmes, SS
McDonald, Ja, P

If he isn't gonna bat NW in the #2 hole, might as well just move McCutchen to that spot, it would make much more sense in a lineup optimization sense.

And Cutch is on second with no one out. Let's get J-Mac the W for his showing today!

3 very nicely pitched games except for one inning and that wasnt that bad.
we will see if it was a result of cold weather or our pitchers having some stuff.

here's hoping. if watson isnt injured anymore and is up to speed, we have a really good BP potential with grilli, melancon, hughes, watson, and wilson - then leroux and gomez (only 24). 2 lefties this year.

CHOKE! First and third and no one out and they can't drive in the run. Only in Pittsburgh.

What a very bad offense this team has it is the same song different year. Either the offense is good or the pitching. Neither gets is going and the shame is there is no hope for this offense.

Back to the one conversation about Jones it worries me that Hurdle is making this a hard platoon honestly I would assume this would have been the type of lefty that Jones should have faced.

Tonights lineup makes some sense.

Marte - 7
Walker - 4
McCutchen - 8
Alvarez - 5
Martin - 2
Jones - 3
Snider - 9
Barmes - 6

I guess Martin was put between Alvarez and Jones to breakup the lefty-lefty.

For what we have, this is the best configuration.

Been pretty brutal so far. Marte had a few hits tonight, though one of them he got a gift call. He's looked pretty lost. Along with everyone else.

Started really slow last year, then surged. Time will tell.

Without a doubt it isn't that bad it seems there is ton of bad luck like Walker who has been hitting the ball hard.

The scary part is after today you subtract out the 11 hits that Marte and McCutchen is over half of the teams hits (10 for the rest). I doubt there is that much bad luck, too many hitters pressing? Not sure but they have some pretty bad hitters getting a lot of AB's on this team.
