St. Louis (6/16)-- After his bullpen logged eight innings Sunday, Mets manager Terry Collins suggested team brass will need to huddle to see if a pitcher needs to be called up for Monday’s series opener in St. Louis.

If the Mets were to go that route, the mechanics likely would involve demoting a position player to add the bullpen arm. Then the Mets could shed a reliever a day or so later when the bullpen stabilizes and activate Eric Young Jr. from the disabled list.

If the Mets think they can get by without calling up an extra pitcher, E.Y. Jr. is expected to be activated from the DL on Monday at Busch Stadium. He played a final rehab game with Double-A Binghamton on Sunday night as he returns from a right hamstring strain.

“We plan on having him tomorrow,” Collins said on Sunday.

Ex-Pirate Ryan Reid appears to be the top-performing reliever with Triple-A Las Vegas at the moment.

With a roster spot needing to be created for either a reliever or E.Y. Jr., a team insider did not foresee Chris Young being affected by that roster decision, despite a .196 batting average and a four-strikeout game Saturday.

Collins said one way the Mets can spare the regular relievers more work on Monday is by having Daisuke Matsuzaka pitch a couple of innings in relief Monday before reentering the rotation Friday in Miami.

Matsuzaka only tossed 17 pitches Sunday before a stomach ailment forced him to depart his start. It was that abbreviated outing that prompted the extreme bullpen workload.

“If I’m physically fit to go tomorrow, I’d definitely like to help out the bullpen,” Matsuzaka said through an interpreter.

ST. LOUIS -- Juan Lagares is getting closer to a return from a strained intercostal muscle on his right side.

Lagares, who last appeared with the Mets on June 1, took live batting practice for the first time since landing on the disabled list on Monday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., including against John Lannan.

Also at the Mets' Florida complex:

Dillon Gee threw off the mound for the first time since suffering his side-muscle injury. Gee hoped he could be in a rehab game after one more throwing session, although pitching coach Dan Warthen has indicated that throwing a live batting practice session might be an intermediate step. Gee is due to visit the Mets this weekend in Miami.

• Lannan, working back into pitching shape after a seven-week absence that has not been publicly explained, indicated he plans to pitch two innings in a game Friday, likely in the Gulf Coast League. Lannan will be assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas as a starter when he is ready to compete at that level.

Are the Mets in some sort of hurry?? They need have more patience at the plate.
Martinez threw just 6 pitches in the 1st...and only 7 in the 2nd....... 6 up/6 down...lol
And he's on a pitch count(50-60) due to the emergency start, according to Mike Metheny....smh

Sheeesh... Wright not only having a lousy year at the plate...but also in the field.
Double, single, double, triple....still 1 out.
Cards just slapping at the ball and it's getting the job done...anyone on the Mets staff taking notes???
5-1 cards.
deGrom can't stop the bleeding..

The Mets played one of their worst games of the season in st. louis on tuesday....and how is this NOT on Collins any longer?
This team is now 5-11 so far in June..and have landed back in the NL east cellar. Things are just getting worse....yet TC and his coaching staff still get the stamp of approval from the clueless owner, and the GM has to go along in agreement. Turmoil will ensue and the losses will begin piling up even more frequently...as well as thousands more empty seats in the stands at home.
Another summer of discontent looms.
