The Mets and Pirates have been rained out on Monday at PNC Park. No makeup date has been announced. The Mets will keep their rotation in order, so Steven Matz pitches Tuesday and Jacob deGrom on Wednesday. The Pirates will now skip Juan Nicasio, who had been scheduled to pitch the middle game of the series. Ex-Met Jon Niese starts Tuesday, followed by fellow southpaw Francisco Liriano on Wednesday.

Morning Briefing: Neil Walker homecoming, take two

PITTSBURGH -- Neil Walker's homecoming was washed away.

Walker did get an ovation from PNC Park employees when he took the field before New York Mets batting practice at 4:52 p.m. ET on Monday. AndPittsburgh Pirates fans cheered his image when the lineups were shown on the scoreboard before the scheduled first pitch.

However, the series opener between the Mets and Pirates ultimately was rained out without a pitch being thrown.

The Mets will play a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 4:05 p.m. ET.Steven Matz starts Game 1, followed by Jacob deGrom in Game 2. This should create an issue where the Mets seemingly have to use Logan Verrett on Saturday in Milwaukee.

“This is a place that I have a lot of great memories -- a lot of great friendships on the field, off the field, in the community,” Walker said during a Monday afternoon news conference at PNC Park. "I bled black and gold for a long, long time. It will still run through my veins for a long, long time. I can't say enough about the fans and about the city and about the community and about the organization.”

•Terry Collins confirms that Kelly Johnson will play some third base for the Mets. The Mets have internally discussed Neil Walker getting time at third base with Dilson Herrera at second base, and Walker told Collins he is on board, but that's not the immediate intention.

•Assistant general manager John Ricco said Kelly Johnson will join the Mets and be active on Friday in Milwaukee. Ricco said the Mets spoke to Johnson at points during the offseason about re-signing with the club

•Terry Collins has resolved to get Alejandro De Aza more playing time. "This guy is a good player," the manager said. De Aza starts for Curtis Granderson on Wednesday in Pittsburgh. De Aza should be in left field on Thursday in Milwaukee, with Michael Conforto off. Collins also plans to give Yoenis Cespedes a day off off this weekend against the Brewers.

The Mets have lost nine straight games against the Pirates. That's the longest drought by the Mets in that head-to-head matchup in franchise history.
