IMO, it is the new emphasis that, started when the sabermetrics guy took over the game, on launch angle and hard hit rate has a huge impact. Much like how emphasis on high velocity over control has changed pitching. Trying to hit a home run every time is hurting hitters. Two rules that Manfred changed were basically because of sabermetrics guys hating steals and singles.

When they encourage lefties to go up there with a massive shift on them, and still only try to pull the ball it just IMO shows the emphasis is on power instead of trying to do anything possible to score a run.
But it seems like it is just the Mariners. And how can a vet be of one level for his career and then come here and just become a totally different player? Cruz and Cano are abut the only two outsiders I can think of that played to their own level. Are the Mariners just baseball purgatory and they all give up?

Well, the twins have played it at least four runs in the bottom of the first so scratch my prediction

That umpire really squeezed Gilbert on a couple pitches that caused the beginning partly

It’s now 5-0
That early ball 3 call seemed to just take the focus away from Gilbert then it rolled downhill from there. He was the AL ERA leader...

Cut the lead to 4 and then right back to 5 two batters later. Not Gilbert's day.

The Mariners will hopefully still be over .500 by the end of the series with the Yankees on the 23rd. But we're talking a lot of hope lol.

After today (and I'm being optimistic with my predictions):

3 games against the A's (2-1). The only team in the next 4 series that isn't a top 6-8 pitching team in the majors. Our turds might be able to score enough runs for a series win.

3 games against the Royals (2-1). It's probably going to be 1-2. They don't give up a lot of runs, so that's bad news for our turds. But hey, I'm going with 2-1 because I'm an optimist.

3 games against the Orioles (1-2). #3 in MLB in runs allowed, tied with the M's. Hoping to get 1 game off this vastly superior team.

4 games against the Yanks (1-3 or swept). Yanks are currently #2 in team ERA in baseball and have given up only 112 runs total. M's pitching, great as it's been, has given up 120 to put things in perspective.

We're going to be 20-18 after today, so if my optimism is remotely correct, then we might be 26-25 or right at .500 by May 23.

Glad I'm working and missed this one. Gilbert got shelled and of course it doesn't look like there was any real fight back from this lineup.

Well today, the Minnesota Twins offense was exactly 1000% better than the Seattle Mariners offense

Final score 11-1

Either we simply forgot this was a four-game series, or we just decided to surrender.

Either way, this was just inexcusable.

Might as well look elsewhere, people; we had our big run for the year. Better luck next season.

I thought I knew baseball, but this is a head scratcher. How can player after player after player end up being the same guy? Average goes down, power is zapped, K's are all-time highs. I just don't get it.
A manager that doesn't teach and a hitting coach that middle schools wouldn't hire because he sucks.

Good predictions but I'm getting a much worse feeling

2-1 against the A's
1-2 against the Royals...They're playing some descent ball right now
0-3 against Baltimore...They have mashers that can put the ball in the stands or get timely hits when needed. M's don't know how to do that.
1-3 against the Yankees...They probably luck into a win killing off a losing streak of 5 or 6 games or swept.

I get that with young guys, but how do 10 year vets come in and just collapse? I mean immediately. Curse of the KingdomeI tell you!

When the guy at the top keeps bringing in the same type of players who end up playing around the same year after year changing the players yet again aren't going to fix it. We need someone different acquiring the players. And someone else coaching them.

What's this 'marine layer' thingy you speak of? I think you spelled 'Justin Smoak' wrong. "I nutted that thing. It should have gone out!" Fucking cry baby. I don't think I ever heard a reference to the marine layer before we traded for Smoak. The infamous marine layer was never a problem for Boone and Edgar in the early days of Safeco Field. Wasn't a problem for Sexson or Ibanez or Cruz or even part timers like Russell Branyan.
