Did they really call Cruz safe? He never even touched the bag...

As much as I like to rip umps I'm gonna give Wendelstedt the benefit of the doubt here. Since the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag, he was watching for the tag...you expect the runner to step on the base...would have been nice to see Cruz at least make some kind of effort, though I guess in the grand scheme of things it would be better if he didn't hurt himself. But yeah Cruz didn't even come close to touching first.

I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch. Mostly just to see what he's got. Maybe the Happ trade will show some value for us eventually. Not an overly impressive minor league career but he has some bright spots

Oh I'm all in favor of seeing new talent get their shot, I'm just not sure THIS is the kind of situation I'd want to see a pitcher land their first MLB start in.

At least Diaz got a soft landing at home before they threw him a couple of tough situations. Yeah, bullpen is different, but still.

It does seem like a tough situation to make a debut, but sometimes hitters also struggle against pitchers they've never seen. In a matchup of unfamiliars, I think the advantage (in that aspect) is with the pitcher.

Seems like umpires are upset about challenges, so they are being assholes about it when it comes to balls and strikes... Something that can't be challenged.

It was a tough start for Sampson, having to make his big league debut in Fenway against the best offense in baseball. The Mariners had a lot of chances to give him a bunch of run support and failed miserably. At least Sampson knows what he has to look forward to for the next few years.
