Morning Briefing: Will weekend Brew help Nats hangover?

NEW YORK -- Maybe Wily Peralta will help reverse the recent struggles of theNew York Mets.

Peralta, who has the highest ERA and WHIP in the majors, starts opposite Steven Matz as the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers open a three-game series Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field.

Matz is making his first start since May 9, and Mets manager Terry Collins said he likely will be slightly conservative with his pitch count. Matz received a cortisone injection Monday to address recent left-forearm soreness.

The teams meet for the first time since the Mets bailed on a July 29 trade that would have brought Carlos Gomez to Queens for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores. Both of those Mets currently are on the disabled list, though, and Gomez is now with the Houston Astros.

The Mets clearly made out well by backing off Gomez over concern about his hip and instead landing Yoenis Cespedes two days later for pitching prospectMichael Fulmer.

Where would the Mets have been with Gomez and not Cespedes?

“I can’t look back,” Collins said. “All I know is it happened from where we sit today.”

Cespedes is the quickest player to 30 homers in a Mets career -- 92 games.

“It’s meant a huge amount. It’s meant an enormous amount,” Collins said about Cespedes’ addition. “That’s why when we re-signed him, my first statement was we are an entirely different team with him in the middle of it because of those numbers. It takes a huge amount of pressure off the other guys in the lineup --David [Wright], [Lucas] Duda, [Neil] Walker, [Michael] Conforto. Even when we moved Michael to third, a lot of his success had to do with who was hitting behind him. So I think he’s changed a lot. Him being here has made a complete difference, and it makes us a different team.”

Capt. America sits again, while Capt. Kirk returns to Citi as a beer maker...

NEW YORK -- Here are the lineups for Friday's 7:10 p.m. ET game against theMilwaukee Brewers.

Third baseman David Wright again is out of the lineup, as was the case Tuesday against the Washington Nationals. Manager Terry Collins indicated this was a scheduled day off for Wright.

Pitchers Sean Gilmartin and Erik Goeddel reportedly are in New York, although neither will be activated pregame because Matt Harvey wants to start in D.C. against the Nationals. Gilmartin cannot return within 10 days of a demotion without a corresponding DL move.

WTF is going on w/ these guys????

Jeeeeeez....maybe, just maybe..they should consider implementing a yoga regimen to keep them loose & limber.
It works!!!... and it increases strength, flexibility and durability.

Lucas Duda (back) scratched, has MRI; status uncertain

*Soup isn't the answer, Sandy.

Call up Dominic Smith.

This team seems to be regressing now....maybe it's time for Collins to go...he's not a motivator, or a good tactician.
I know Sandy has been dealing w/ personal health issues, but one of his assistants should take over for now to get some deals/trades/call ups in the works to upgrade.
This BS complacency isn't helping anyone but the other teams.

These guys never use the hit & run/run & hit...and they suck at moving runners over....not to mention failing more times than not w/ RISP.

Unimaginative, lackluster baseball is for the frickin birds.

Ugghhhhh...

5/21.
Mets third baseman David Wright entered the day in a four-way tie for the franchise lead in walk-off hits. He moved past Kevin McReynolds, Ed Kranepool and Rusty Staub with a game-winning single on a 3-0 pitch in the bottom of the ninth to give the Mets a 5-4 win over the Brewers on Saturday in Queens. Wright heard boos after striking out for the 50th time in 33 games, but turned those around with his clutch hit. "He's still a great player," said Mets manager Terry Collins. As the weather gets better, when he gets comfortable, I think he'll be fine."
