Goeddel takes the mound to begin the 6th.
Another subpar outing from deGrom....
There's been talk of TC maybe skipping his next start....I think that'd be wise...as it seemed to work for Thor.

*First time deGrom has allowed double-digit hits this season and just the second time in his career. (12 last year vs. Cardinals).

Meanwhile....Goeddel tosses a 1-2-3 inning on just 7 pitches.

Not looking too good but they've been coming back a lot lately, so there's hope.

More importantly, is everything okay with deGrom?

One can only hope....but my guess is fatigue.
My other concern is Duda..he's been playing like he's concussed/in a daze.....

Sure would be nice if they both got their mojo back soon.

Speaking of concussions, Bryce Harper doesn't seem to be suffering from his collision the other day...he's driven in every run in the Nats/Philly game

Should be interesting to see how the Mets respond in tomorrow's rubber game...

Cubbies won their nitecap after dropping the 1st game to the Buccos.

Also...just for the fuck of it....Go Rockies!!

Eh, can't win em all. Miami always kills us late in the year.

Definitely gotta bounce back tomorrow, can't expect much more help from the Gnats' opponents

Marlins hit deGrom hard and stop Mets' winning streak, 9-3

NEW YORK -- For the first time in a long time, the New York Mets didn't have a comeback in them.

The Mets had All-Star Jacob deGrom on the mound Tuesday night, but he wasn't sharp, and they lost to the Miami Marlins, 9-3, at Citi Field. The defeat snaps their eight-game winning streak.

The Mets are now 83-62 and saw their lead in the NL East reduced to 8.5 games, thanks to the Washington Nationals' win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Their magic number to clinch the division title remains at 10.

The Marlins are now 62-83.

Rather stunning: DeGrom entered the game with a 2.40 ERA, but the Marlins hit balls hard off him all night, beginning with Dee Gordon's leadoff single to open the game.

He managed to keep Miami off the board until the fourth inning, but then the roof caved in. The Marlins scored three runs in the fourth, and three more in the fifth -- and it could have been worse. They ran themselves out of both innings, first on a stolen base attempt and then on a runner trying to advance to second on a throw.

DeGrom didn't give up any home runs, just a bunch of singles and doubles sprayed all over the ballpark. He went just five innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits -- the second time in his past five starts he's given up six earned runs.

The Marlins tacked on one more run in the seventh, off Mets relievers Erik Goeddel and Eric O'Flaherty. And Gordon hit a two-run homer off Dario Alvarezin the ninth. Alvarez exited the game with a leg injury.

Offensively: The Mets actually took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, before the Marlins blew the game open. Curtis Granderson led off with a single, and eventually scored on a David Wright double. But after that, the Mets managed just three more hits off Miami starter Tom Koehler over the next five innings.

Koehler walked Ruben Tejada and Kelly Johnson to open the seventh inning, butMike Dunn came in and struck out Granderson, Yoenis Cespedes and Daniel Murphy -- very impressive.

The Mets did add two runs in the eighth inning off Marlins reliever Bryan Morris. Wright led off with a walk, Michael Conforto doubled, and Wright scored on a groundout. Then Tejada drove home Conforto with a single.

What's next: The series finale. It'll be Bartolo Colon (14-11, 4.13) on the mound for the Mets, opposed by Adam Conley (3-1, 4.93), with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Terry Collins, Jacob deGrom frustrated after Mets' streak snapped

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets still have a huge lead in the National League East, despite Tuesday's lopsided loss to the Marlins. But their skipper and starting pitcher weren't very happy after the 9-3 defeat, which ended their eight-game winning streak.

Manager Terry Collins was clearly ticked off about slugger Yoenis Cespedes being hit by a pitch in the first inning. And Jacob deGrom gave up six earned runs for the second time in his past five starts.

Cespedes, the hottest hitter in baseball, homered against the Marlins on Monday. A day later, Marlins starter Tom Koehler suspiciously drilled Cespedes in the back with a 92 mph fastball, the first pitch of his first at-bat of the game.

Collins chose his words carefully when asked about the plunking after the game.

"I think it bothered us a little bit," Collins said. "So ... we’ll answer it in our own due time."

Cespedes wasn't available in the Mets clubhouse after the game.

Jacob deGrom has pitched a career-high 181 innings this season. Brad Penner/USA TODAY Sports

But the bigger issue is deGrom, arguably the Mets' best starting pitcher, who has suddenly looked ordinary of late. His ERA for the season is 2.64, but over his past five starts it's 6.41.

He held Miami scoreless through three innings Tuesday, but then the Marlins broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. It all came on singles and doubles, not homers, but most of them were hit hard and sprayed all over the field.

"It was just a start where in the fourth and fifth inning, I couldn’t locate the ball and left it over the middle," deGrom said. "I felt fine early in the game."

"We’ve gotta make sure we get the ball down in the zone," Collins said. "That’s where he’s been struggling lately; he’s left a lot of balls up, and been hurt."

This is deGrom's first full season in the big leagues, and he's now thrown a career-high 181 innings. He threw 178 2/3 between Triple-A Las Vegas and the Mets last year.

He doesn't have an innings limit like teammates Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard, but naturally people are beginning to wonder if deGrom is tiring, since he pitched so well for most of this season.

The possibility of having deGrom skip his next start to give him a breather was raised to Collins after the game, and he didn't rule it out, but he didn't sound likely to do so, either.

"The one thing we cannot forget is, we are in a pennant race," Collins said. "We are at the end of the season, we do not need to be getting rid of our best pitchers and letting them sit on the side for a while.

"If we decide to skip him we skip him, but we've got some games in between, we’ll see what goes on."

As for deGrom, he insists he feels fine physically.

"I’d like to keep pitching," deGrom said. "I’ve had bad starts before; it’s about how you react after them. I’d like to get back out there."

Here's a prediction: Bartolo Colon will plunk one of the Marlins on Wednesday, and deGrom will make his next scheduled start.

Morning Briefing: Revenge in rubber game?

FIRST PITCH:
The New York Mets and Marlins will play the rubber game of their three-game series Wednesday night at Citi Field, and there could be some extracurricular activity.

Overshadowed by the Mets having their eight-game winning streak stopped Tuesday was the fact that Yoenis Cespedes was hit in the back by Marlins pitcherTom Koehler on the first pitch of his first at-bat, and it certainly appeared to be on purpose.

Mets manager Terry Collins hinted after the game that the Mets will seek retribution for having their star slugger plunked. We'll see if it happens Wednesday.

The Mets are 8.5 games ahead of the Nationals in the NL East, and their magic number to clinch the division is 10.

Wednesday's news reports:

  • The Mets' Jacob deGrom was roughed up for the second time in three weeks Tuesday. Read game recaps in the Daily News, Post, Times, Newsday, Record,NJ.com and MLB.com.

  • It might be time for the Mets to start worrying about deGrom, writes Ken Davidoff in the Post.

  • The Mets thought hard before trading for Cespedes, writes Tim Rohan in theTimes.

  • Mets closer Jeurys Familia is embracing fatherhood this season, writes Andy Martino in the Daily News.

  • Steven Matz is putting in extra work to get ready for the Yankees, writes David Lennon in Newsday.
