For games that are blowout losses, does there have to be a MVP? Sometimes yes, but sometimes everyone sucks.

I would swap Favors and Hayward in their MVP placement. A swingman can't be a MVP shooting 43%. That's just one criterion against him.

I go game by game. It accumulates. And yes, there has to be an MVP every game, because Least Bad Player isn't a good category.

Thanks, but you're wrong.

Just kidding. I go game by game and there have been times where I will put a player who shot poorly but in volumes below in the rankings. There are times where I felt one player or another sparked the game winning stretch and gave them the MVP. I listed three and weighed them because I didn't want to deal with hard decisions. Even then, games like the Celtics last night, I wanted to list Neto in the Top Three of MVPs for the night, but my formula I use valued Favors, Gobert, and Hayward more for the game overall by a significant amount. I did like Neto's performance, but would I really go four-deep on an MVP list on a given night?

Derrick Favors started out really well and ended well but in the middle either was injured or didn't play as well (could be related to injury).

That's not to dispute what you said, just an observation of mine.

I do think "No MVP" is a valid conclusion, for some games. ;)

Would you ever give two players co-MVPs for a game?

No, I force myself to make a decision, with the consolation that the second-place still gets two points and the third-place still gets one and that I feel the whole season will add up to something reasonable. I might call an audible after all that and go with someone else than the points leader, but for midseason awards, I feel I should stick with the formula. I think I did the opposite last year and picked someone I thought was playing the best at the break, but then reasoned that over an 82 game season, the points would be supported.

I do prorate at the end where I pretend everyone played 82 games. What I do is see what the average points per mention is and divide that by how many games played and multiply that by 82. For example, if someone scored 72 points in 48 times mentioned in 70 games, I would say that was 1.5 points per mention and divide 1.5 by 48/70 and multiply that by 82.

Yes, I am being silly. I would just divide 72 points by 70 games and multiply that by 82.

By the way, if you look at the summary of the game by game post, Derrick Favors was on pace for 129 of my points system and Hayward is 137. Favors could overtake Hayward even in my system. Let's start tonight! Though I probably should try to remain neutral in my game-by-game voting.

Not that my system is important or anything, but what do you think if I gave Burke the Sixth Man award with his bad shooting? What if I gave it to Burks because he pro-rated well, but was injured so much. I kind of feel that Neto should be eligible, though he starts. Booker disappointed early but is coming on strong, but that's not good for the pro-rate since he played all those disappointing games early instead of say, missing them due to injury.

Also, I understand a lot of the impact of players isn't statistical and it doesn't always show up in the recaps, gameday threads, or box scores (yes, I consult all three before voting, unfortunately not on this site, though I am trying to get people to come here). Let's say a bench player scores 2 points on 1-8 shooting but the 2 points was a buzzer beater to win the game? What if he had also had 6 assists? 7 TOs? A negative +/-? Good man on man defense? (Well, that precludes Burke, one of the only bench players I would ever expect taking/hitting a game-winner unless it's a Booker put-back. But you know what I mean, hypothetically.)

Burke has played 51 vs. Burks 28 games. Burke gets the edge. If it was within 9 games at the ASB, then go with the better player regardless of games played.

Since you like calculating stuff, how many ppg does Favors have to average for him to take the lead from Hayward?

Favors is the team's best scorer, him taking the team lead in ppg would just make it statistically officially.

Scoring isn't the thing that Hayward is best at, anyways.
