Cowboys get record four pick-6

McNeese State Cowboys wide receiver Kent Shelby (1) pushes his way past the reach of Incarnate Word Cardinals safety Robert Hayes Jr. (26) during the 1st half of Southland Conference game at McNeese State University, Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.

Incarnate Word Cardinals wide receiver Jamari Gilbert (22) gets stopped by McNeese State Cowboys defensive back Hanif Muhammad (18) and McNeese State Cowboys defensive back Colby Burton (4) during the 1st half of Southland Conference game at McNeese State University, Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.

When the McNeese State offense went to the sideline after kicking a field goal, it trailed Incarnate Word by four points.

When it returned to the field to start a drive in the closing minutes of the first quarter, it did so with a 10-point lead.

The Cowboys dominated UIW for a 55-7 homecoming victory, thanks in large part to the play of its defensive secondary which hauled in four interceptions returned for touchdowns, tying the NCAA record.

“I’ve never heard of it,” said McNeese head coach Lance Guidry. “That’s huge. Hats off to the guys. A lot of times when you get interceptions you worry about clipping. … But we were clean in all of them. I’m very proud of our defensive unit right now.”

The first gave McNeese (6-1, 3-1 Southland Conference) its first lead when Calum Foster picked one off in the flat and took it 42 yards that put the Cowboys ahead 10-7.

The next came less than 2 minutes later on the ensuing drive when Colby Burton grabbed an interception and wove his way through the defense and used some blockers for 51 yards and a touchdown that gave McNeese a 17-7 lead.

“Those two guys, Calum Foster and Colby Burton, those two are youngsters,” said McNeese wide receiver Kent Shelby. “For them to make plays like that, that shows they have confidence to go up against other defenders every week.”

The next two came in the second half, the first when Dominique Hill returned another interception, this one for 38 yards to give McNeese a 45-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

That one broke the school record, and the next one by Marcus Foster, who returned one from 29 yards out to tie the national record with more than 7 minutes remaining in the game.

Andre Fuller also intercepted a pass in the end zone thanks to a deflected pass by linebacker B.J. Blunt.

“It was really fun,” Hill said. “We were playing really fast tonight. We knew what we were going to get formation and play-wise. We had a great game, and we executed.”

And it wasn’t just forcing turnovers that made the performance of McNeese’s secondary dominant. The Cowboys limited the Cardinals (1-6, 1-4 SLC) to 16 yards through the air on 14 pass attempts in the first half and 65 yards of total passing offense for the game.

As a result, McNeese head UIW to 149 yards of total offense, fewer than the defense earned on those pick-sixes in which it accrued 160 yards.

Quarterback James Tabary came out of the game in the third quarter with the Cowboys comfortably ahead by 38 points after completing 17 of 33 passes for 276 yards and a touchdown with one interception. He was sacked once.

Lawayne Ross, Shelby and Darious Crawley did a bulk of the work in the receiving game, combining for 239 yards on 14 receptions.

“I just stressed to our guys to stay the course,” Tabary said. “If we could continue to just keep doing our job, we were going to score.”

David Hamm led McNeese running the ball with 91 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Joe Lissard came in to replace Tabary late in the game, and the completed 4 of 8 passes for 45 yards. Cody Orgeron also took three snaps behind center but did not attempt a pass.

UIW scored on the opening kickoff when Desmond Hite returned Trent Manuel’s kick 96 yards for the score.

“We’ve been having trouble getting enough hang time on the ball and letting our guys cover,” Guidry said. “So we went to a bunch of sky kicks and squibs.”

Now the Cowboys will gear up for one of their biggest games of the season next week when they will travel to play conference leader Central Arkansas.

“They know,” Guidry said. “We got shutout 35-0. … They’re going to be ready to play. I don’t expect any letdown.”

Incarnate Word should have stayed out of Division 1 football.

Incarnate Word has a larger enrollment (3,000 and change) compared to McNeese st..

I don't know much about Incarnate history / path to the FCS.

They are a private, Catholic school, along with two others in San Antonio. Plus UTSA.

And there is too much competition for football players there that they don't have much of a chance to be even mediocre.

Appreciate the info. UTSA is having a good year and sure that hurts Word locally.
