You can have all those aging FA vets. I'll stick with the youngsters and roster we have and let Luke develop them into a multiple championship team just like Phil did when Luke was still playing and what Luke experienced at GS with the logo as a consultant!

Remember though, a big part of the Lakers multiple title success, both with Showtime and with Phil, was picking up aging FA's who still had something to contribute.

I have no problem with bringing in that type of FA as long as it doesn't mean giving up any of the core youngsters. Guys like that can speed up the learning curve and help them get to the finals a little sooner.

Yea TJF12, that strategy dates back to Westhead and Riley's days as the Mychal Thompson trade put us over the top for another championship or two. Perhaps a KD or CP3 would be in that mode but what has been happening recently is we have gone after people and they want no part of us or we have sold out to the hype and got royally burned. Obviously this was due in part to having no real attraction factors but much of that has changed with Luke and the young great talent and the way Luke has this entire roster playing.

If we continue the course that Luke is developing and stick with our people rather than get bug-eyed for FAs like we did with Nash/Howard, we will have learned that lesson. The tendency for us is to lose perspective when big names become available and recently we have been very gullible for that sort of horseshit.

I agree. No reason to get bug eyed. Especially if it involves sacrificing the future to try and get back in the title hunt right now.

The difference between now and the past couple of years though, was the Lakers had an aging Kobe who was no longer a guaranteed deep playoff run and coaches no one wanted to play for.

Where @DJ CP3 idea has merit is the Lakers now have a talented young core that could actually prolong a veteran players career because he won't have to carry so much of the load. They also have a coach that players actually seem to want to play for.

To be fair, at the time, it was absolutely the right move. Literally everyone had the Lakers and Heat meeting in the finals because of that trade.

It was supposed to get Kobe a legit shot at a couple of titles before he retired and then be left with an, in his prime Dwight, to reload around.

Had it worked, we would be praising Mitch and yes, even Jim Buss, as geniuses.

The fact that it blew up so spectacularly says more about Dwight as a person than it does about the move itself.

Agreed TJF12. Obviously there were a conflagration of factors that went south for what was hoped to be a elixir for an aging franchise and cover the hopes for a championship for a retiring superstar. Too big for it be full proof and work out like the Lakers are used to especially when fart boy turned out to be such a psychosocial child wrapped up in an adult athlete's body!
