Raptors Reach Agreement With Mickael Pietrus, McGuire To Be Waived
Nov 29, 2012 8:48 PM EST

Mickael Pietrus has reached agreement on a one-year, veteran-minimum contract with the Toronto Raptors, agent Bill McCandless confirmed to RealGM on Thursday night. The deal will be made official Friday, McCandless confirmed.

"It came down, in the end, to choosing the team who liked him best," said McCandless.

USA Today first reported Pietrus’ deal with the Raptors.

In the end, Pietrus passed up five offers – from the Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs – due to the Raptors’ relentless pursuit. Recently, Pietrus rejected the Spurs’ offer of a contract guaranteeing just one month.

Pietrus’ camp has been in dialogue with the Raptors since the offseason, and Toronto general manager Bryan Colangelo has attempted to acquire the 6-foot-6 forward through trade in the past.

Dominic McGuire will be waived by the Raptors to make room on the roster, agent Mark Bartelstein told RealGM.

Pietrus, 30, has averaged 8.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in his nine-year NBA career with four different teams. Pietrus, who has been training in France for months, has established himself as a solid outside shooter and a top-tier wing defender when healthy.

“I always wanted to be a Raptor,” Pietrus added. “I came here last year. In a year, it changed. I’m excited to be here. I know we’ve got a lot of injuries. I’m going to do my best to play good for my team. Even though we’re not where we’re supposed to be, because we lost five games under two games, I’m excited to be here.”

The Raptors could only offer Pietrus the veteran’s minimum. Until Fields returns, he, DeRozan and rookie Terrence Ross are likely to get the majority of the minutes at the swingman positions, with Kleiza used when the Raptors need some more offensive punch.

Pietrus also might mean coach Dwane Casey opts for the two-point guard lineup featuring both Kyle Lowry and Jose Calderon less often.

“We needed that. It’s been one of our Achilles’ heels since Landry and Alan went down,” Casey said. “Dom did a good job in that situation as far as being a defender, but point wise we’re at a deficit a that wing position at point production. Not only that, but just running the floor defensive presence and experience.”
