This is gonna be a fucking mess.

Look how often Horse Collar Tackles are already called wrong. But now basically you can't pull a guy down from behind. You can't pull him down from the front or back. You can't hit him too high. You can't even form tackle him, if he bends over at all and meets you low.

They are basically legislating it to the point you can only tackle low and take out a guys knees.

But if you ask any player in the NFL, every single one would say tackle me any way you want, just don't dive at my knees.

The worst part too is that they're gonna start fining these guys huge sums of money. Real money. And they don't seem to fake guys salaries into account on those fines. Maybe Chris Jones or some of these other guys that are making 20+ million won't mind a 10-15k+ fine. But what about those guys who've only made a couple hundred k.

And personally I fucking hate NFL refs already. No need to give them more subjective calls that can change the game so much.

At some point the NFL is gonna cross the rubicon with overlegislating tackling. It’s an inherently violent sport. Lot of hip drops are just shitty and do lead to injuries. My issue is moreso I have no idea how this is enforced in game coherently. Seems like a scheme to just slap fines onto players knowing fans will watch mostly the same game.

This is just the body weight rule all over again.

Flag football is right around the corner. NFL will disappear and the new NFFL will become the new sport. Until then, the pussification will continue.

The stats seems to show that this tackle produced 25 times more injuries than the average tackle.

I'm not sure how they could just ignore that stat.
The stat isn’t so much the issue so much as the enforcement mechanism. Means testing tackling just doesn’t really work, imo. It’s one thing to ban a relatively intentional tackle, in most cases, like facemasks and horsecollars. Hip drops are a much messier thing, imo. I would be more concerned about protections after football than hip drops, imo.

What’s next, gator roll tackles?

NFL: "We have to have a safer game!"

Also NFL: "Nope, we're not getting rid of astroturf."
That’s the part for me that makes it impossible to take seriously. These are mega billionaires that can’t be bothered with proper field of play. They want to legislate something that would be very messy to enforce though? Yeah, I don’t believe that.

Field turf these days (does anyone still have astroturf?), but agreed. Safer game, but let's further limit your offseason prep and add more games to your schedule. Also, we'll flag guys for spearing with their helmet, but won't go as far as the NCAA's targeting rule and immediately suspend players for doing so.

Didn't bother reading any farther than this line, including all the follow up responses. I agree 200%, it was the very first thought that entered my mind when I learned of this. It's gonna be a fuckfest just waiting to happen.

There......now I can go ahead and read all the rest.

grabbing and dragging was never proper technique, it's piggy-back

Well they get roughing the passer correct 100% of the time so no way will this change lead to multiple games being swung by bad calls.

MF's get intentional grounding right about 7% of the time. And that's nowhere near as subjective as this.

My hope is they call it a shit ton in the preseason and get it wrong a bunch of times. Then they shelve it for the regular season while they work on the rule.

I mean I'm all for a safer game, and there's nothing even exciting about those tackles. But you gotta get it right.

Someone is going to get screwed in a "controversial" call and it will be the Bengals. This shit is mentally exhausting.

I'm against it, ruins the sport. I hated it when the NHL banned high sticking, slashing, cross-checking and spearing, took all the fun out of the game, the NFL is on that path.

It seems more like a precautionary measure to avoid rolling guys ankles and knees under a bunch of weight and pressure. Tackling is simple … smack the guy at just below hip height, below his butt, use arms to wrap around hip to knee area, and use the force you applied to bring the guy down. That would not be considered a penalty, I think.

It’s true. The hip tackle in question is a move that causes injury. Go for a real tackle.

You are down, bitch!
